my motor has 80,000 miles on it, I change the oil every 3,000 miles, I just changed it yesterday.

when I started it up last night when I got off work, It knocked for about 30 seconds, then it stopped knocking and all I could hear was the normal Ticking I ussually hear.

I checked my oil, and it is about a half an inch under the safe line, BUT the Add oil line is not visible yet.

is this knock caused by my oil Change?

should I add a little more oil to get it to the safe line?

IT is not burning oil, and from what I can tell it is not leaking it either.

any suggestions why this motor is knocking?

Two thoughts and almost without question one has to be correct > You eather put a fram filter on (known to have bad bypass valves) or you just got a defective filter with a bad valve allowing your engine oil to drain down while sitting a spell >

I agree with what OBIO3 said as a possiblilty, but the bigger issue sounds to me to be your one or more of your hydraulic valve lash adjusters. It seems to be another common Dakota issue. Mine have been tapping for about 25K miles now (now at 82K miles). Oil & oil filter brand made no change. They got a lot better after running some Auto-rx through the system, but the tapping is still there to some degree. I bought a set of new adjusters (Dodge only part!), but I haven't gotten around to putting them in yet. I even bought the special tool to install them with out removing the cams, but now I think I'll install a set of HO cams at the same time so I won't be needing the tool.

I have been using FRAM the whole time owning this truck, I have never had this problem,.

Now I realize that it is more of a Tap or a Tick rather than a Knock.

My old Dodge Spirit Knocked because the seals were bad, valves bad, and it burned oil, and it was losing oil.

I have not seen any oil leaking from my truck, I checked the oil it is fine still in the Safe zone. I have not seen any oil burned out of my exaust, I haven't smelt it either.

the sound might be my header gaskets though.

I thought it was a knock because I was parked up beside a brick wall, so it reflected off it. I haven't heard it since last night, so I think all is ok.

if the FRAM filter caused this, I will use another brand in the future. any suggestions?

also I would like to note that my Oil Pressure is still good, and there is no "check Gauges" light, or Engine light on.

It seems to be running fine now, but I will take into consideration what you all have said

Thanks.

It seems that my motor made that sound again, and once it is warmed up, it doesnt do it? is this the Fram Filter causing this?

It is a louder Tap than just the Lifter Tick.

What is it?

I am not losing oil pressure, or burning oil.

OBIO3, when you say Buick engine. I assume you mean like a 3.8 V6 or others they made with the EXTERNAL oil pump???

Them 3.8's SUCKED for priming the first time too. You had to PACK them gears with grease, (or I think we used petroleum jelly?) when you first assemble one of them ba$tard engines. Otherwise it ran without EVER pumping oil, then the KNOCK and it's too late! new engine needs new crank and bearings!

Sounds like piston slap to me. Motor warms up the pistons ( GROW ) the knocking goes away.
People with heavy foots often will put the TB to the floor just after starting a cold motor. The pistons have not grown Motor still cold. This will cause heavy piston skirt wear. To the point where the pistons slap when cold.
You guys want good oil filters try wix.

Well, Fellas, My motor is not Knocking anymore, just the usual Lifter Tick that Dodge Motors have after a long while.

It must have been a fluke, even when I start it up in the morning, it doesn't do it, si I guess all things are good,

next time I change my oil, I will use a K&N Filter just to be on the safe side.
