1993 Dakota 4X4 318 Automatic. In winter weather it runs fine. As ambient temp gets warmer the truck just shuts off. It is now 75-80 degrees and the truck won't even start. My 91 and 93 are doing the same thing. No spark, no electric to the engine or components. All electric except what makes it run. Have changed the computer and the engine does not over heat. The 91 is a four cylinder standard transmission. All shops want to do is start replacing till they find it. HELP!

Check the splice for the SBEC power in the wiring harness near the Power Distribution Center. You will have to open up the harness and look for a splice with several red wires. If there is a blue powdery substance at this splice, this may be your problem. This problem is usually intermittant when it starts and temperature may affect it.

The check engine light won't illuminate, not sure if it worked when it ran. So, we didn't run that test. Have a friend that has a engine annalizer, doesn't work if the engine isn't running.

OK,I have a 92 318 it did the same thing I think I'm going to check that splice blakles mentioned.

Sounds like the asd.relay is being tripped. What I did to turn it back on is, unscrew the 5\16 screw in the 60 wire plug to the computer, pull the plug, then unscrew the 5 torx screws holding the cover on,then reconnect the plug. Now you will see at the front-top of the computer a red and a green condenser and right behind those a wavery metal piece. Turn the key to the on position. Then wiggle the metal piece with your finger. You should hear the electrical come back on under the hood, and the check engine light will come back on. AS the check engine light only comes on for a short while it may not be on by the time you get back around to the cab. So turn the key off then on again. If the light comes on then it should start. Since wiggling this will trip the asd to come on. It will also trip it to turn it off with a few seconds delay . Oh yea disconnect the battery Before doing the plug. then reconnect it after the plug is back in. Dont want to short any thing.

Let me know!!

What is the ASD relay and what would make it trip off? If I run through this test, are you saying that it should reset and stay set or that there may be a problem that is tripping the ASD relay? Is the wavey piece of metal behind the condencer a heat sink? How does wiggling this reset the relay. Not doubting your suggestion, just have too many questions!

Will let you know how it turns out! Thanks.

The asd relay is Automatic Shut Down Relay. A lot of things can trip it. When tripped it shuts down fuel, and electical to the engine. Ive had it shut down because of a bad hall effect pickup coil, it was a temperature related problem, and hard to diagnose due to its ghost effect. I doubt this test will permanently fix the problem, but if it works like mine did then you can get any codes stored on the computer. Yes the wavery metal is a heat sink. I dont know exactly how it works only that it did in my case. Mine is losing voltage to the computer, so I will be looking at that connection in the wire harness coming from the relay box ( inside fender, drivers side, plastic box ) there's a three way red wire connection about a foot from the box that gets corroded. It supplies power to the computer and the asd. I hope this answers your questions and gets it running so you can retrieve the codes. that will be a good starting point to diagnose your problem.
