Subject: Steering Binding IP: Logged
Message: I have an '04 QC 4x4 4.7, 23,000 miles. The steering feels like it's binding on very light inputs just off center. Like on a gradual curve when you just need to turn a little more and it wont turn. Then all of a sudden it breaks loose and you're swerving all over. Anyone else have this type of problem?
This just started a week or two ago and has gradually gotten worse.
Thanks for any help,
Scott B.

Message: Originally, this problem started when the weather started getting warmer. Then it cooled off and the problem went away. Even when the temps went back up the problem did not reoccur...until last week.
I was driving down my street at 20 mph and there was a bottle in the road. I make a quick steer (1/8 turn) to avoid it and the problem came back immediately, only 10 times worse.
It had like zero power assist about every 1/2 turn of the wheel for several miles. Then I stopped for about 5 minutes and when I restarted the problem was completely gone. But it reocurred every morning and every day leaving work. I checked the intermediate shaft and it seemed OK, fluid was clean and full.
Took it to the dealer on Monday, and on Wednesday they replaced the rack and pinion assembly...did not fix the problem. I called them on Thursday and was told they had a power steering pump and high pressure hose on order. Still had not come in on Friday so the truck is still there until atleast Monday.
I found another post here from someone who seemed to have the exact same symtoms but he never followed up with the result. Luckily it's still under warranty (28K on it now)as the rack alone was over $800. I will post the final results when I get it back.
