But why not fix it? If you have less than 80K miles on your truck, the catalytic converter is still under warranty, so you can get a new one free from your dealer.

Message: Chryslar makes a crapy converter. I've had two fail. First one the deal charged about $500.00, the second one I bought from auto zone with a life time warranty was about $140.00, but was bear to change. If you can replace it yourself thats what I'd do with an aftermarkert since the factory can't seen to manufacture one that will last.

Message: "Chryslar" doesn't make catalytic converters, "crapy" or otherwise. DaimlerChrysler GmBH of Stuttgart, Germany, and it's division, Dodge manufacturers the Dakota. The catalytic converters, like 90% of the rest of the truck are out sourced.

Message: My original catcon on my 92 Daytona 2.5L TBI 5-speed now has 244K miles on it, and it still passes emissions easily. My last car, 85 Daytona with same setup had the original catcon working fine at 157K miles when I traded it, still passed by a wide margin.
Maybe it's the driver that's crappy, not the part.

There is no 1996 cutoff, if it came with one, it is required by federal law to have a good working one - back to 1975. But again, if he's under 80K miles, he gets a new one free from the dealer. FREE is good.

Message: Don't go to the dealer for a replacement converter. Hello, he's just going to give you another defective one. I can't imagine actually paying money for it too. Get a Carsound, or any other brand. While you're at chop out that bad stock muffler too, if you still have it.

Maremont (Arvin) makes a good OEM muffler that's high flow, and their catcons seem good, too.

Message: If your cat went bad, you should check out the reason it did because you're running rich. The cat has no moving parts and should never fail on it's own. It's "heat operated" and the exhaust temp should be about 100 deg difference before and after cat. The factory cat on my 95 lasted 9 years and 140+k miles before I had to replace it.
checked out your O2 sensor? bad O2's won't always throw a code. you can be running rich and it be within spec so voltage isn't off on the O2 signal.
A good tune-up and good O2 sensors will work wonders.

Message: If you take your cat off your pcm will be reading an excess amount of oxygen since your 02 will not be correctly installed. It will think it is running lean and send more fuel to your engine. If you want to remove it you have to get a dummy O2 sensor and that is gonna cost about 100 bucks so might as well get a new cat.
