Subject: Emissions Laws Question IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys, I used to post here frequently, but I have been out for a long time. I am wanting to get rid of my crappy 4cyl and paut a built up 360 in there. Can I even put a caburated version of the 360 in my truck and be legal. Or do I have to have en engine with the same emissions as a 98??? I have the money and plans for a kickbutt 360 over the 400 hp and torque mark. But I need to know if it is even possible to keep it on the street. I live in AZ now, but I will move to Florida soon, and might want to get residency there.
Please Help!
Thanks,
Justin

Message: Florida doesnt have emissions testing anymore and according to the emissions law you cant change the engine even if it come from the same year and model truck.

Huh???
You can certainly replace an engine with same size, same year. Best to call DMV in FL to be sure what you can do.

Message: But see I want to change it out with a crate 360, not the normal fuel injected 360 in the RT. That would be nice too, but I can get better power by far for my money with the crate engine. Plus when I build it up a little it would be shweet. I know guys on this site have out even Viper engines in our Daks, so how did they get away with it?

Message: Move to Oregon we can put anything into anything we want. I used to live in Texas and I used to change motors out there also with no problems and they had yearly inspections, but no emission checks. Seems like some would get real picky about what was under the hood when I bought it compared to what I would put in there . Others would shoot it right through as long as it was safe to drive. I even lived in Cal. with my hybrids. They charged $300 bucks at dmv For being non Cal, But if you could pass emissions your good to go. Do you know anybody in Florida? Ask them.

Message: I'm sure the Florida DMV has a website that has a FAQ on smog laws and engine swaps. Or at the least, a number you can call to talk to an expert. Don't just take the word of some guy on a forum. Do you want to be able to register and drive this truck or not? Hate to see you invest a ton of money then get burned by the DMV. Unless you got a powerful friend in Florida, follow the rules I say.

Message: Exactly my point. If I was not worried about following the rules I would have not asked. Thanks for the responses so far. I am going to look at the Florida DMV, and see what I can dig up. I will let you know when I do.
