Subject: Engine dying momentarily @ hyway speeds IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know what may be causing this problem. It's happened a couple of times. While driving on the Interstate, my rpms drop to almost 0 for a second or two, then come back up and everything is back to normal.
I've got a 98 Dakota, 5.2 V8, Auto, 4x4, ext-cab.
I would appreciate any insight.

Message: first thing i would do is go to your local Auto Zone and have them pull the codes then report back what you find. sounds like possibly a dirty/loose/corroded connection somewhere.

Message: my 02 does the same thing at 100mph. Does this happen at the same speed and rpm, If so I still could not tell you what the problem is.

Message: I have a 5.2 that used to just up and die. I would notice the check engine light wouldn't come on with the key turned to on like it usually does just before starting it. So while the key was on I smacked the computer and it came on and started . So I unhooked the battery and pulled the plug w/about 60 wires out of the computer (I think that took a torx socket) Then I used electronic cleaner and sprayed it good. Well it would still take spells of dying or not starting without its smack till its now like yours just dies for a second or two at highway speeds. Usually @ 65 or 70. I wouldn't recommend smacking your computer as it could worsen the condition, but you might clean that connection

Message: In response to ecdak, It's happened 3 sets of times on the highway, each going around 65mph. Not sure if the rpms were exactly 2000 each time. 2 of the times the it would happen twice within about 30 seconds.
Also, I had a friend put one of those aftermarket car computer code readers on the Dakota, and there were no errors stored.
I might have to stop by a Dodge dealer.

Message: Mine is a 92 5.2 mag . It seems when this happens it is a loss of elec. power. LIke the asd relay is shutting it down ,but mine does give the code 12 . That the power to the pcm has been disconnected the battery and connections are in good shape . If I knew which pin in the connector supplies the power to the computer, I could check that connection a little better . If yours is not reading any codes maybe its the asd relay or its connections
Just my 2 cents

Message: According to alldata, the PCM wiring is the same on the 3.9 and 5.2. I have a 95 3.9
PIN function circuit
51 asd relay control K51 / 20DB/YL
57 asd relay output A142 / 16DG/OR
looking into the connector, black on top , pin 1 top left. middle top is pin 21 and right top is pin 41.
worth spending the $24.95 for alldata.

Message: Yeah it's all online, not downloadable. The wiring diagrams are really nice.
First vehicle is 24.95, second is like 14.95. It's Make/model specific. I have a 95 3.9L 4x4.

Message: Here's one a those tricks we don't think of > Take one of those small cheap timing lights and hook it to any spark plug wire > run it between the hood and forewall and tap it to your driverside wiper so your pretty much looking right at it > Now take your normal next highway trip > When it happens if it's ignition the light will stop working > If it don't it's some sort a fuel problem > Now you got a much better idea where to be looking >oh > I bought my cheapy in a garage sale foe 50 cents lol

Message: so what's the verdict. Did you get it fixed? I hope you can fix it w/o going to the dealer. who needs a whole day of hassle and expense like that. When I would hit my gov at 100mph it would shut down until 95 and come back on again. being that you have a 98 that is a 7 year old set up that just might only need some minor help and maintence.

Message: ecdak, no I haven't got it fixed. I'm going to let it happen again, and use a code checker thingamagigg to see if it'll tell me anything. If that doesn't work, I'm gonna do some soul-searching and decide if I want to spend serious money on letting a dealer look at it, or just let it ride until it breaks and eliminate any mystery. In the mean time, I may try some of the tricks suggested on this thread. If I do figure it out, I'll post it. Thanks.
