Subject: Oil Change Mystery

Message:
This past weekend I did an oil change on my 99 Dak 5.2L SLT. It was a little overdue for the change (5200 miles) but I was not very concerned. The truck has been sitting since 1/1/05 because I have been driving the wife's car to and from work. The Dakota only got driven on Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays. There were no real problems with the oil change except when it came time for clean up.

While putting the old oil back into the quarts, I noticed that I only pulled 2.5qts of old oil out, but put 5 in.

The real question is...Where did the other oil go?
I also replaced the EGR valve (old one was not bad). There is no oil in the coolant and no oil dripping on my drive way. My only thought is that I have finally blown the head gasket and it is sucking in oil slowly over the miles.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

So you're burning a quart every 2,000 miles. Check the level more often.

Mr. Lincoln,

You sound like my father. That's the exact same thing he said. I am just having a hard time believing my truck is an oil burner. I have had the 99 almost 2 years now and this is a first.

It probably just used it and it was not checked to notice this. My 4.7 uses almost a quart every 3500 miles. This was also true of my 5.0 Ford and 350 Chevy. I do not race my trucks or abuse them so I know that oil consumption was not due to premature wear. In fact I've heard many others state that their trucks use a normal amount of oil. Just my two cents.

From what I understand the belly pan gasket is a problem because of dis-similar metals with a gasket in-between. The intake is aluiminum and the plate on the bottom is steel. As metal heats it expands. The aluiminum expands at a different rate than steel which causes the gasket to wear and lose its seal. Thus sucking oil into the intake and then into the cylinder. There it is burnt with the fuel. So yes it is burnning oil. I just wonder if Hoss and Jed has looked in their intake to see if that is there problem

EGR on a 99? Not on my 99 3.9. You'd be surprised how much oil that damn belly pan gasket leak causes. You really should check your oil more often now that you know you have this problem. It's an easy enough fix especially since you have alternate transportation.
