Subject: repaint over stock peeling paint!?!?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a 98' from a dealer who had done a respray over the stock (I assume) peeling paint. I have head that the paint problems are due to primer issues and it is necessary to take it down to the metal to avoid probelms in the future. OF COURSE, the dealer would never take it down to metal. So my question is, has anybody done a similar respray and how long have you gone without problems?

You might get two years if its garaged. 6 months if it sits outside most of the time. :(

Really depends on the condition of the paint underneath.

Never. You can though, sand prep the defect paint, primer coat it, THEN color and clearcoat. Only rust and plastics need stripping.

The defect is that the powdercoat primer reacts with UV exposure through the very thin color coat and oxidizes, and the finish color lets go. My factory paint chips measured 2.5 microinches thick, body shop said 4.5 microinches is typical of a good factory paint job. So if the finish color had been thick enough, it wouldn't have peeled so soon.

Two ways to fix it: As said, sand into the powdercoat primer to rough it up, then paint conventional primer over it, then finish color and clearcoat. Or start over, grind to the bare metal, etch, prime and paint. That cost me $1700. All depends on what you want.

So it loks like the paint might have a chance of holding on. I can tell they did sand (can see some sanding marks), primer (poor masking job) and then paint. My wife is gonna laugh at me if I have a cover on both the 70' Camaro and the Dak!

Mine is 93 but same UV primer issues, not like they haven't known for awhile. Prevous truck from the late 80's same thing. 6 years ago paid $1,000 for new paint where supposedly they went into the primer and built it up again. Looked nice till last year when it started coming off in sheets, and it is thick but base primer stays on the truck. Rewiring the garage for 220V and new Air Compresser for a HVLP spray gun. Doing it myself this time and needed an excuse to purchase the Air tools anyways ;)
