Subject: Drivetrain Noise IP: Logged
Message: I recently bought a 2001 Dakota V-6 with 5-speed manual transmission. This is the 1st manual tranny I've had in about 10 years. Here's the problem: When I let the clutch out I sometimes hear a single "klunk" coming from somewhere in the drivetrain. It is most noticeable when letting the clutch out when making a turn. I took it back to the dealer and they said is was the backlash in the rearend and it was normal. And that it would stop occuring when I get better at using the clutch. Is the dealer right? Does anyone else have this problem?

Message: The answer you got is most likely correct. There is enough "slop" when you add up the play in the gears, u-joints, and such to make noise when the engine and wheel speeds differ enoungh when connected. A rough shift will do what you are hearing. If it is mild and only when you make unsmooth shifts there probably isn't anything to worry about.

Message: Thanks for the reply. I have not driven a manual tranny in 8 years so I'm a little "rusty". This is the 4th manual tranny vehicle I have owned and I don't recall the last three vehicles having any kind of "klunk" from improper shifting/clutching.

Message: Not to worry. My truck will give loud klunks when I goof up a shift. My 4-banger FWD cars (past and present) pale in comparison when I don't shift smooth.
The setups are all different between vehicles. My QC has four u-joints (two section drive shaft), and this adds up to a lot of travel with the backlash in the rearend gear set. When I have it on a lift I am amazed at how much slop there actually is when I rock the rear wheels back-and-forth.
Good luck and have fun with your manual tranny!
