Thank you for anyones help.

I have a 00 dak sport with 111k miles, that I need to change out the evaporator per dealer findings. Im sure nothing new to this board, but dealer quote was $1528 to replace it. LMAO. And I thought plugs, wires, rotor and cap for 564 was bad!!! After reading many posts, I would like to try and tackle it myself but not sure exactly where to get the replacement parts.

FROM EBAY, is this the part I need for a 3.9 vin X
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7970999614&category=33547

ALso, does anyone think while im in there I should replace the heater c since the mileage? If so, can I go to any parts place and get a generic heater core?

And finally is there anything i need to have parts wise on hand while i open everything up. Im going to get the Turndown tube that is posted on a previous thread.

Again thanks for all your help,

Mike

Hi Kabala, I'm not sure I can help you with this. I am an HVAC mech but have never changed out an auto evaperator. I'm not sure of the fittings that are used, you may need to buy the entire line set (refrigeration tubing). You will need to pull the system down into a good vacuum using a vacuum pump once your done and before you recharge the system with 134A. You should run the pump for at least an hour and then let it sit for a few hours and see if it holds the vacuum. If it dosent, you have a leak. The price really seems high but I'm not surprised being from a dealership. I'm sure there are alot of manhours getting the old one out and new one in and the parts are probably on the expensive side. I say, good luck and be ready for a long long day.

I changed out the evaporator on my 1994 dakoda today. I don't know about a 2000 model, but the one on ebay isn't the one in my truck. The parts catalog called for one of two types, a Plate type and a Surpintine (sp)type. Mine was a plate type and cost $126.00 from an O'Reilly's parts store. Without a positive ID I wouldn't bid.

KABALA: i have changed both my evaporator and my heater core on my 2000 quad cab, if you think that you should replace your heater core as well than i would say yes as you do not want to rip apart you dash again it is just like changing your timing chain and not replaceing your water pump while you in there, anyway i bought my heater core for 37 dollars and my evaporator for 139 dollars at napa plus 30 dollars for enough coolant for the job, o and if you have a/c you have to discharge the a/c and then you need an a/c fuel line disconnector tool to remove the a/c lines from the evaporator, if you need any more info on how to remove everything i will be glad to help as it is a b!tch to take out the dash, not for the faint of heart.

Thanks for the help, Im sure Ill be calling on help again. I just dont wanna sweat my balls off this summer.

OK so Even when i look online at parts houses, they ask whether its serpintine or fin, so im confused. I guess i could just call the dealer, lol.

A few others have made it seem tedious and long to do, but not that hard. Hopefully I dont get frustrated and burn the bastard and have insurance buy me a new one, LOL

thanks again!!

Mike

Not trying to sound like a butthole, but ifyour not sure about the difference between those 2 then it probably wouldnt be wise to rip your dash apart, alot of things can go wrong while you are in their, and you will also need to find somewhere to recharge the system too

Personally I wouldn't buy an evaporator online, if its defective you could get stuck. If you purchase from a parts store at least if its defective you can get a replacement.

I'm not positive both types are available for your year truck, but a vist to a parts store and a look in the parts catalog will tell. Don't worry about taking apart the under dash, there will be no positive way to tell if both types are available in your truck. I ran for a whole week with my under dash removed. I just pulled the heater core hose off and and ran it from the thermostat bypass to the water pump. good luck.
