Subject: Help with front end (Getting lower) IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I have a 99 Dodge Dakota 4X4 V8. I bought the truck new and the front end keeps getting lower and lower. I have no idea what could be going on, the front is like as high as a 2-wheel drive dakota now. All the new ones and the older ones have so much more clearance, if anyone has any ideas of what could be wrong please let me know!!
Thanks

Message: Typicaly over time the front end suspension will settle. The factory does set the front lower than the back. Fortunately, This is easily fixed with a quick torsion bar adjustment. There is an adjustment bolt at the rear of each torsion bar. place a bubble level in the door jam and turn the bolts in a clockwise direction untill the truck is level. Now bounce the front end up and down a couple of times to get the suspension to settle and adjust again if needed. make sure you also level the truck from left to right. you can check this with a tape measurer from the ground to the top of the front wheel wells. Oh, and make sure your truck is on a level surface before you make the adjustments. Last but not least make sure you get a front end alignment done as soon as your finished as you have just changed the camber. I think it is unwise to use this method to lift the front end more than just to level your truck. You should need nothing more than just a socket, breaker bar, level and tape measure.
Hope this helps.

Message: Thanks for the info. I thought that was it, my friend had got under the truck and tried to tighten them to raise it and he said that they were all the way up, it would not turn any at all! I took it to the dealer today and they told me that it was in factory specs and that they put it against a new one and it was the same, I told them they were lying and when I went there is was 3 inches lower than a 99 that was there beside it, so they told me to bring it back on Monday, but after what my friend said about the bars not being able to turn anymore I am not sure what they will say. Anymore suggestions?
Thanks,
Phillip

Message: The torsion bar bolts are sometimes not easy to turn at first. This is why I suggested using a breaker bar. You may try breaking them loose with an impact wrench. Thats what I did. Trust me they are not turned all the way, They can lift the truck quite a bit before the bolts are bottomed out. You have to understand that by turning the bolts you are lifting the wieght of the truck.
Give it a little elbow greese.

Message: Well we went under the truck again today, the bolts are turned all the way, we got them to turn and it was lowering the truck and then we turned them back the other way and it stopped right where it was before. There is no more room to turn them. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow, my friend said that Dodge messed up when they built my truck and put the torsion bars on wrong, he said that the dealer is going to have to take them off and repostion them so that there would be room to crank them more. I guess he is right since there is no more room to crank them. Have to see what happens tomorrow, I am kinda scared since the dealers never know anything!!
Thanks Guys
