Subject: Are My Balljoints Bad? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97' with 5.2, 5 speed. I felt a shimmy in the front end last spring, pulled off the wheels, and as I suspected I had to put new rotors and pads in front. Fixed the problem. Now recently it has started shaking in the front end like the rotors are bad when I brake, but I just replaced them and have only put 10K miles on them. I have the recipt of when the balljoints were replaced under warranty in 2000, I'll have to look to wee what mileage it was at. Could they be bad again @110,000 miles? I heard that they recently recalled 600K Dakotas and Durangos for balljoints becasue the wheels are falling off. Apparently they haven't fixed the problem right.
Thanks for your help guys.

Message: would check the runout on those "new" rotors. it's not impossible to warp them in only 10k. overtightening lugnuts comes to mind.
check the cheap stiff first.

Message: You might have your tires balanced. From what I have heard from guys in alignment shops a lot of percieved fron end problems are just bad tires or out of balance tires. Out of balance itres can cause a shake during braking.

Message: Yup this is true, it can also cause shaking in the steering wheel a little bit without the brakes, just regular driving. My front right tire wasnt balanced correctly and was doing that but I got it fixed and its fine now. It kinda stinks because the inside of that tire is obvously warn down more than the outside... oh well, new tires soon anyway.

Message: My bet would be the rotors, read this enlightening article:

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have your ball joints inspected by a reliable mechanic.

Message: I have also learned the hard way that a tire with a sliped or possible bad belt can also cause a bad vibration during braking and some times during driving. The tire I had go bad only had about 4,000 miles on it and was a factory diffect in the tire. Replaced the tire and didnt have the vibration again. It only takes a few min to chech them and doesnt cost a thing.
