Subject: Dead battery, won't idle IP: Logged
Message: Had a dead battery a few weeks ago...first time in my '00 4.7 dak. Was able to jump it fine, but she would'nt idle unless I gassed her. Needless to say it was an interesting ride home in my 5-speed.
Put a new battery in and problem solved. I did reset the PCM before installing the new battery, but now I'm not so sure if I had to?
Anyway, was curious whether or not this is standard behavior on the dak due to a PCM safety setting or something like that. What is the explanation?

Message: Yup, heard that many times. When idle quality starts to deteriorate, that's one of the first things to look at.

Message: The alternator does not seem to generate enough power to keep the truck running at idle. I have been through two batteries and had this experiance also. Both times the battery died because the crappy oem post clamps streched and became loose.

Message: The alternator will generate enough power to allow the truck to idle; that's not the answer. The PCM is sensitive to low voltage - this affects its memory. The truck then has to relearn the idle info.

so not true
The alternator does not seem to generate enough power to keep the truck running at idle.
so very true, specially if he had the lights on and the headbanging stereo on and the AC/heater fan on etc. At idle the OPTIONAL alternater only puts out about 20/25 amps and then maxes out at117 amps standard and 136 amps with the optional one at around 1700 engine rpm.

Message: I purchased the soft horseshoe style clamps and cut the leads as close to the factory ones as possible. Its got a screw on clamp for the wires that holds them nicely. You don't have alot of slack so cut close as you can to factory leads. Took me about 10 mins to replace positive and negative clamps. Cost 2 bucks a clamp, and buts some dielectiric grease and smear it all over them to stop corossion. The horseshoe clamps are nice cause there is pleanty of screw left if they need further tightening in the future.

Message: I was only posting observed behavior thats why I said seems to. I have had two dead batteries and truck could idle with neither both times the battery died, I noticed I had a loose positive or negative clamp.

Message: Yup, and it is possible for acsessories to draw more power than an alternator can power at idle. But no conditions like that were stipulated in the original post; and most anyone who's actually replaced the battery themself will notice that even with a new battery the PCM will have to relearn the idle before it will hold an idle.
