Subject: Lower Ball Joint Woes - Need Help
IP: Logged

Message:
I've just spent the last 5 hours working on replacing one of my lower ball joints. It's pressed in and I cannot for the life of me get it out. My service manual says there should be either a snap ring or 4 stakes holding it in. I have neither. As far as I can tell there is nothing holding it in other than the press fit. Anyhow, I've been trying to press it out and I bent my ball joint press. The ball joint is pretty mangled so I really don't want to put everything back together so I can take it somewhere....and I don't want to take off the whole control arm except as a last resort. BTW: My ball joint press was a cheap $40 Harbor Freight press. I'm going to run up to Autozone and rent what is hopefully a better one. In the meantime, anyone have suggestions? It bothers me that I see no snap ring or stakes...unless I'm completely blind.

Thanks,
Jim

I got it out...the trick was using the press from Autozone. Looked pretty much the same as mine only it didn't bend. And it actually pressed the part out. There was not snap ring, stakes, etc...
