Subject: Does a 180 tstat work? IP: Logged
Message: After doing a search on this topic, I've heard people say they help and others who say they provide no gains and do nothing more than keep the temps lower. Since I'll be changing the water pump and will be in that area anyway, I was going to change the tstat to a 180 but wanted to get an answer once and for all if they help.

Message: Until I see a dyno sheet that shows the performance boost, all it does it keep your temp down a bit. Which can hurt you on smog checks.

Message: my truck, '00 QC 3.9 5spd, didn't like it. kept getting a code for engine too cold for too long. P1842 i think so i put the 195 back and re-located the IAT instead. i have a v8 tb and 1 range colder spark plug than stock.

Message: My '01 5.9 didn't like it either. Ran poorly and got worse fuel mileage. The computer still kept it in enrichment mode after the thermostat was open.
Now I have a hypertech, so I might try it again this year. I still get a little pinging under a heavy load, maybe that will help.

Message: The first time a had a 180* Tstat, the guy that did the replacement for me, damaged it by over torking it. The consequence was that it stayed open all the time, and off course triggering the mill light (engine too could for too long).
That was in january of 2002. Than i replaced the Tstat again for another 180*(by my self this time), and never had any problems.
There is no reason to change Tstat if you don`t have the mods that take advantage of a little colder engine, for exemple, CAI, PCM flashs or chips, headers, cat back and or etc.
I don`t think it helps w/ fuel economy.

Message: I put one in just about a month ago in preparation for summer, but I think I might be taking it out. On the first tank of gas I averaged about 2 mpg less than normal. Could have been other things I suppose, but I'd rather stick with what's supposed to be in there.

Message: Yea they work, they keep it at 180degrees.
Ha ha
My 4.7 manual, doesn't seem to mind it, I also got rid of the belt clutch/fan though. Stays nice and cool, never had a MIL on it.
As far as a dyno increase just from that, no way, but the potential for engine life, and making power is a little better a lottle cooler.
In my county here in TX, they just hook up to the comm port. NO recent codes, passes emmissions!
