Subject: Can I re-use my spindle nuts?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just noticed that my service manual says that the spindle nuts are NOT re-useable. I'm planning on replacing my lower ball joints Saturday. The Dodge parts department said they would have to order them ($8.00 each) and I wouldn't get them until next week. I really want to get this done Saturday. The parts guy also said he's never sold a spindle nut, and they don't need to be replaced. I called 2 Dodge service departments. One said you should replace it, and another said you don't need to unless the threads look all messed up. He said they almost never replace them. Anyone know if I really need to replace it?

BTW: I have a 2004 4wd Dakota.

Thanks,

Jim

Don't the spindle nuts use nylon in them? Could be why. If it were my truck I would replace them. I'm not endangering myself or the truck with bad parts, especially when they are $8 each.

Hi Jim,

Which "spindle nuts" are they referring to? The ones clamping the outer CV spline through the hub?

If they do actually have nylon stops in them, then I guess I see why you would want to replace them. In my 2000, they have a cotter pin and cap to keep them from backing out.

They do take a bunch of torque, 175 ft lb, if I remember right. They're pretty hard too, the wrench doesn't mark them even with all that torque.

If your wheels allow it, pop the center logo caps out and take a look at what type of nuts it has. If they're cottered, I wouldn't sweat it. If they're indeed nylon stopped as implied, then I'd (a) put the old ones back on and only drive as much as needed, then (b) put the new ones on when they show up next week, and drive all you want. But that's only what I'd do...

In fact, if your wheels allow the center caps to be popped out, and the nuts aren't the cottered type, you can probably R&R the nut with the wheel on the truck in just a few minutes. No way to do a cotter pin with the wheel on though.

Are these the Ny-lock nuts? When I replaced the wheel bearings on my 00 CC 2wd I put 3-4 drops of locktite on the old Ny-lock nuts, torqued them down and called it good. No problem at all and the old Ny-lock insert was still grabbing pretty good.

I think they want the nuts replaced so there is no question of whether or not the Ny-lock insert is good, plus it makes another good revenue stream for Dodge.

If the parts guy said he never sold one....

Thanks for the responses. I also have a cotter pin and cap, Steve. So maybe I'm ok.

I think I've solved the problem: I'm a bonehead. I was looking through my manual more thoroughly. The section where they talk about throwing the nut out and getting a new one is in the 2-wheel drive section for hub replacement/removal. That one has no cotter pin / cap. In the 4-wheel drive section (like mine), they show it with the cotter pin / cap and don't say you need to replace the nut. I just needed to pay more attention to what section I was in.

Sorry about that, but thanks again for the help. (and your memory is pretty good with the regards to the torque: my manual says 180 ft lb)
