Message: AFAIK there are only two axles for Dakotas (1997-2004) - Corporate 8.25" for non-V8 applications, and Corporate 9.25" for V8 applications. The 9.25" is installed as part of specifying a V8 engine; there is no separate ordering option for this axle. Don't know where your friend came across the Dana 44...

Message: Like I said, AFAIK.
The bottom line is Dakotas don't have Dana axle's as a factory option.

Message: I didn't think that our trucks came with Dana axles either, but I couldn't help but notice when I was under my truck that the rubber plug in the rearend says 'Dana' on it. Is that just a plug the dealership put in after servicing my rear differential? Just curious.

Message: the dana is a weaker axle compared to the 9.25
the nissan titan uses a d 44 variation and has some really wierd break in schedule for towing with it. if you dont follow the break in exactly you just fried your rear end. the 8.25 and 9.25 have proven to be pretty reliable axles so be happy you dont have a d44

Message: Kev - its impossible to guess what might be in your truck since you didn't list any info on it. The heavier duty 9.25" corporate rear has an octagonally shaped 12 bolt cover. One example of v-8s that didn't get the 9.25" are most full time 4WD models, since the torque is spread between two differentials.
