I was told to clean the idle air control on the throttle body. What does it look like and how do I clean it?

The IAC is the one on the throttle body closest to the firewall. It's really best to remove the tb to clean the IAC. It has a 'plunger' type end which is controlled by a stepper motor. Do not bang it hard on anything nor twist it. Be sure to dlean the by-pass air port in the tb that is exposed when you after you remove it. Matter of fact, clean the whole tb while you're at it. It's sure to have carbon/oil deposits on it.

Doubtful...the IAC controls the idle. Normally if it's dirty you'll notice your truck idles poorly and dies when it should catch and idle. Like when shifting from reverse to drive and stuff or from reverse/drive to park.
Some solutions for pinging...look around, there's actually a whole article on this.
Changing to a cooler thermostat (180*F)
Switching spark plugs to a cooler plug (Autolite 3923)
Switching to a higher grade of gas
...the death flash...which you DON'T want done.
