Yup... that was an obvious question/answer here.

You may want to ask that question in a more "unbiased" forum...

BTW, I love my Dak, the S-10 was WAY too small and the V8 power is just another plus! Also, I just personally think that the Dak just LOOKS better than an S-10 or any other "compact truck" (yeah right... like the Dak is actually a "compact"? Heh.. Midsize maybe.. but compact, Never!)

You cannot beat a "mid-sized" truck. Is small enough to do offroading, and large enough to tow, haul, etc. Perfect fit for me!

Not to mention the power and HP rating advantage = Dakota!

If you like the new styling on the trailblazer then wait for the new S-10 (as long as they put the 4.2L I6 in it). Personally, I think the Dak is still the better choice. The styling and power just can't be beat with the Dakotas. If you're looking in the used market, Dakota all the way. Just check to see if the ball joints have been done.

This really depends on the use of the truck. If you plan on hauling things- it's the Dak hands down. If it's just a driver- the Dak has alot more interior room. The downsides:
The s-10 is short one major option- a headstone that pops up when you have a wreck. It has the worst safety record of ALL trucks. It has NO resale value. Has really bad build quality.
The Dak gets bad gas mileage. Chrysler is well known for lousy service. Build quality is better than s-10 but still not great.
The pluses
The s-10 gets better mileage. Junkyards are full of wrecks making parts cheap and easy and the blood does wash off.
The Dak has more room, is a great driving truck, Hauls more, pulls more, is safer for you and your family, and you can come to this site every day and listen to the guys brag about their Daks.
I really think that you are wanting to buy a Dak, nobody compares a Dak to an s-10. It ain't even in the same ballpark. After you buy your Dak, let us know about it.

The price of the s-10 isn't even better then the Dakota. The Dealer here has a 2001 sport RC with a/c and v-6 for $12800 brand new. The comparable S-10 was a vinal seat, pure white, stripped 4-cylinder, w/o even A/C for $11,500. Even a v-8 Quad cab 4x4 can be had for just over $21000. With all the current incentives the most expensive Dakota I've seen was $24,000. Why people pay $20,000 for a S-10 or Ranger, or even more for a Toyota just escapes me. Service on all my Dodges over the last 15 years (as rare as it has been needed) has always been an easy experience, and that's 4 different dealers in 3 states. My only chevy in those years had a complete motor failure at 43,000 miles on a 50,000 mile warranty (thank god for 1990 and the 3 year 50,000 mile deal) and it took two dealers and 2 months of down time to fix, fighting about the warranty coverage the whole time. $4500 worth of work over a failed headgasket! I've thrown rods out of a Plymouth and been back on the road in 3 days for $600. Good old 318's.

Go with the Dak. My brother is a car salesman for a Chevy dealership. He has never been fond of Mopar products but stated that my Dak was by far better than those S-10 trucks. In fact he told me it would be an unwise decision for me to get one of those. My loaded 2001 CC 4x4 (AWD), 4.7 ($23269.00 with TTL)was just a hair more than the price of their 2wd V-6 truck with similar equipment. And on top of that, I hav hella more room and power...

I feel compelled to answer this quesiton sense I traded in a 2k Regular Cab S10 about 2.5 weeks ago on a 2001 Dakota Club Cab. I wont lie, I really liked my little S10. It was SUPER quite inside and drove good. That being said, it was VERY small inside and was seriously lacking in the power deptartment. I am 6'-4" tall so it was probably more uncomfortable for me than it is for many others. As for the Dakota, I honestly feel like I took a major step up in quality, comfort and power. As much as I liked the Dakota on the test drive, I liked it even more after owning it for a week. I commute into New Orleans (about 35 miles one way), and the dakota is a dream come true. It glides over our sorry ass roads like a Crown Vic, and it handles great. The one piece of advise I would give would be to get the extended cab either way you go. If you don't you will regrete it within 6 months.....or at least I did.

ALthough we all are biased here, it really depends on what you are going for. I love the Dodge power & looks, but my Rangers of the past (sorry for swearing) had better quality. I still pick the Dodge still because of looks & quality.

If you're simply buying a reg cab 4x2, V6 or 4 cyl, its a toss up. I would believe a stock vs. stock V6 ranger or s10 will beat a stock V6 Dakota on the strip, street.

If you opt for the V8, you will certainly kick azz against any s10 or Ranger (stock vs. stock).

Just my $.02

Stock Reg cab 4.0L 5 speed 4x2 Ranger ran 16.5s, I think Daks run low 17s, right?

I know several friends and a couple family members that have had problems with S-10s both with 4.3 and smaller the 2.8 sixes. Seems to be a common problem with rear main seals giving way at 100-150K miles. I can speak from personal experience. My S-10 Blazer (2.8) went at 95K. Currently have a 96 GMC Sonoma (wife) which is starting to nickel and dime me at 95K. AC needed recharged when it was 2 years old. Also have an 01 4x4 Quad Cab Dak with no problems at 20K. Previously had a 98 2wd 3.9 Dak and It was 10 times better than any S-10, I test drove, or the Sonoma I now have. There isn't really that much price difference between a Dodge like I had and the S-10, and you'll get much more truck for the money. Take both for a drive and you'll see for yourself. Hence the reason I bought an 01 Dak, and am selling the Sonoma this year. She wants to can the Sonoma for a blue 2wd 4.7 5-speed Dak Standard Cab. Gotta love her!

I thought I covered this price thing! How much did you pay for an S-10? I bet you could have spent a minor amount more and gotten much more in a Dakota. Unless you bought used and then the incredible depreciation the s-10 has is tough for the Dakota to beat.

A stock v6 s-10 or ranger can't keep up with a 3.9l dakota; I used to have a 95 rc 3.9l 5 speed,
and i would blow away all the rangers and s-10s.
Now I have a 99 5.2l cc auto and it is not even in the same class as the s-10s and rangers; Go with the dodge dude;

Brad the 4.2 I6 vortec engine will not be used in the s-10. They are working on a 4 cylinder and 5 cylinder based on the 4200 Vortec engine. I guess you have not been paying attention to all of the recent scares about C.A.F.E. standards being increased. You are going to see the power output and displacement on all trucks other then the HeavyDuty version decrease alot in the next 10 years. The base engines are going to get smaller and smaller and the optional engine s in each segment will be alot smaller. You are going to start seeing more clean burning diessel designs and direct ultra high pressure injection with lean burn gasoline engines. If anything you will probably see the 4200 vortec engine ofered in the two wheel drive work truck model full size truck.
