IP: Logged

Message:
with $1000 i figure i can afford an intake setup, probably from 360intakez.com, and a catback system.

what combo would you guys suggest?

or what would you do with $1000 and a STOCK '04, 4.7, QC, 2wd, 3.55, open diff?

Gears and lsd first. You should be able to do that for around $750, installed. I'd recommend 4.10's. That will be your most noticeable mod. With your other $250, I'd pick up a good flowing muffler and have an exhaust shop cut your old one out/weld the new one in. Factory tailpipe is mandrel bent. You'll get some sound and maybe a few ponies. You should have enough money left to do a homebrew intake.

In your case, you mentioned a budget. The gears will give you the best return for your money. The 4.7 makes power you're not even using right now because of the 3.55's.

My own 4.10's are going in shortly. I wanted to see how the truck would respond with 3.55's and my mods and I've proved my own theory. Do the gears first.

just gotta remember with higher gears, it will be quicker but also eat up more gas. depends if you care about gas mileage. my truck is my daily driver so i try to get as much mileage out of it as possible.

It depends. My experience with 4.7 trucks is that 3.92/4.10 trucks get better mileage than 3.55 trucks. They're in they're power band more often. Sort of like getting better mileage on the highway vs. stop and go traffic.

billy,

thats a very good point, but how much highway mpg will that take away??
since i bought my truck its managed to go from vegas to AZ about 3 times and SOcal about 3 times.
i figure it will see more long distance trips like this and i dont want to sacrifice mgp...well at least not a big sacrifice.

thanX

I don't think you will lose anything with the 4.10's. My experience has been, with 4.7 trucks in particular, that you'll pick up a half mpg.

Bill is right. 3.92 gears will give you the best bang for the buck. You will be applying more torque to the pavement. Depending on how you drive, your mileage may even be a little better.

Since you live in AZ, I wouldn't waste money on LS unless you're in the dirt a lot. In which case, I would use an air locker instead of LS.

You'll have plenty of money left over. So get get your computer recalibrated with Hypertech or the like.

Cat back systems add no power whatsoever. Do it strictly for the sound and looks. Air intakes are of questionable value, and can easily be made by yourself for a lot less money.

it wouldnt be a waste of money if u bought an LS. u would have more traction and be able to lay down more power. plus on a side note, two burnout tracks looks better than a one wheel wonder track anyday.

I have the 4.7 and did the swap from 3.55 to 4.10's. The swap actually did help my mileage. I now can a accelerate quicker and maintain cruising speeds on the highway much easier.

Everyone else is right a cat-back does nothing for performance and only makes your ride sound better. I would just buy the muffler of your choice and have a good shope weld it in.

The HO cams were my first mod and did make a noticable difference in performance. They pull stronger from 2000-5000 rpm.

I have an 03 with the new Superchips programmer. The ones for the 04's should hopefully be out soon. Do you have and auto or stick. With the superchips i get a pretty good chirp when i shift from first to second. The performance setting also gave me a noticable difference in performance.

Intakes can be pretty expensive. I personally didn't notice any difference from using an intake. It was pretty loud though. My current set up, which i think works the best, is a 3" mandrel bent piece of tubing with a 90 degree bend that goes from the throttle body to the stock air box along with a K&N drop in. If you are really set on the intake sound, just take the snorkel off the front of the stock air box.

Happy modding!

3.92 or 4.10...thats something i will definitely consider.

i also was told a bigger TB will make a big difference. so, do you guys think i should get a bigger TB and gears...or gears and wait until the '04 tuner is out?

also, what do you guys know about voiding the warranty with after-market parts like a TB and gears?

To void a warranty over an aftermarket part, they have to show the aftermarket part caused the problem.

Definitely some 4.10's and LSD
HO cams you should be able to get pretty cheap too.
Just throw a new muffler in and dump the exhaust = hella rumble
Cheap 360airintakez - should be mucho funner then.

It's "cams" (plural) because you have a left, and a right. I'd expect more from the cams than Bill's exhaust suggestion, maybe he was figuring installed cost ? If you can do the work yourself, for $1000 you might go with cams; find a good deal on a boneyard 3.92 rear; and still have close to enough left over to get some ignition advance (superchips, unless someone's come up with a flash for '04). That would put you way ahead of the loud exhaust guys. If you go the exhaust route, make sure to eliminate the restrictive y-pipe.
