Looking into buying a '97 4x4 dakota with the v6. It has this unusual tapping i haven't heard in an engine befor. I'm used to my honda 4 bangers...so is this normal for this paticular engine.

Depends... there is a normal timing chain slap, but how loud is it? It shouldn't be loud enough to catch your attention real easily I wouldn't think. Otherwise you could be hearing a lifter tapping or something else that isn't normal.

HEY,

I had the same problem, In my 318 so i did the cheapest thing first and that was a oil change even if it wasn't due. I looked in the Dodge manual it stated if you have too much oil, meaning on the dip stick over the full line, the oil might dip into the tappets which is no good.causing the valves not to seat properly. Also if you are too low below the line it will take in air also causing them not to seat properly. Change the oil and see what happens and keep it at the right level. Just my two cents i could be wrong.
