Subject: compressing caliper piston IP: Logged
Message: i changed my brake pads last night, and while i was compressing the driver side caliper piston, fluid started pouring onto the floor from under the truck. that's when i realized i forgot to open the cap to the reserve on the master cylinder, it looks like it just forced itself out of the cap, but is the master cylinder ok? it seems to stop fine, but it just got me scared.

Message: It shouldn´t have damaged anything, exept maybe the cap, but be sure to wash the brake fluid off every part it may have touched with some solvent, or maybe gasoline, because brake fluid is an exellent paint stripper.

Message: Always open the bleeder when compressing the caliper. If you don't it pushes the old dirty brake fluid that has been sitting there since new back into the system. It can harm anti-lock brake systems.

Message: actually the OLD brake fluid types will strip paint, the new DOT3 or DOT4 won't do anything but make it really shiny.
