Subject: RE: fuel gauge ? IP: Logged
Message: Just picked up a used 1994 Dodge Dakota SLAT Extended Cab (v8) for about $3K Said they kept fuel lines low intentionally to prevent people from siphoning off the lot.
But, on departing and filling up, gauge still reads empty. Kinda sux b/c I don't know what mileage to expect and thus tripometer method is unknown. Assuming I didn't overpay for the vehicle already - thinking about the sending unit, fuel pump, and the fuse as the source of the problem...I can check fuses, but have no idea what a sending unit is, nor how to replace it. Would that be cost prohibitive?
What to do?

Message: Its possible that the gauge fuse is the problem, but if its the sending unit, it is part of the fuel pump which is in the tank. That isn't cost prohibitive, but not cheap either. If you can do the work yourself then so much the better. thing is, it could be a broken wire, or a bad connection between the fuel pump, and the dash. If I remember correctly if its the fuse for the gauge more than one gauge wouldn't be working properly. So if no other gauge is giving you problems, most likely it is something else. It COULD be a bad gauge, I doubt that though. most likely its either a broken wire, bad connection, or sending unit is bad.
Good Luck

Message: Well, it turns out it was the sending unit - all fuses turned out to be okay, and I took it to a shop that can check electrical signal strength. He said that at about 150K miles it's good to change the fuel pump so I did the whole thing....when he was underneath, saw the shocks were in need of replacement...now in for $3600
Hope it doesn't need any more maintenance for a while - mechanic said it was a good buy though...and otherwise looked to be in good shape.

Message: CB; do you mind if I ask what changing out the fuel pump cost you? I have a 92 Dakota with the same problem you described with your fuel gage. Mine gets down to E so I pull in to put gas in and can only get it to take 6 or 7 gallons. So I know the gage has to be off. After pumping the gas in the gage jumps up to full but after a short while begins to fall back to half and then down close to E again. Looks like I'm headed down the same road you took. Any advice?

Message: I chipped out $400 for a new pump, a new front set of shocks, and replacing a few O-rings...that was parts and labor.
Was pleased with the results too! :-)
