Subject: Rear axle matches from what year???
IP: Logged

Message:
I found a great deal on an entire rear axle complete with 3.92's and a LSD..... which is exactly what I want. It is off a 2002 and I'm wondering if it will fit on my '97 without too much of a hassle, or even at all. Thanks.

it should fit with no problem..

only thing is that if you are going from an 8.25" rear to a 9.25", you'll need bigger u-bolts.

Actually it is the 8.25, it has the 10 bolt pattern on the diff cover.

From looking at the pic though it appears that it was from a 4x2, as the leafs were mounted on the underside of the axle. My truck, being a 4wd, they are located ontop of the axle. Can this easily be worked around? Any more help would be great. Thanks.

Just make sure you change the front ratio to match that 3.92 in the rear

Thanks fellas. Hopefully if I can find those spring perches it should mate up just fine.

I'm trying to do this whole process gradually. I'd just buy the ring and pinion for a 3.92 but the labor cost for installation is ridiculous, especially for doing both a front and rear differential. I figure I'm better off just buying the entire axle and just swapping it in myself. Now I just have to be patient for awhile and wait to find a good front diff with a 3.92 to swap in too :) (anyone got one sitting around let me know?)

Is your rearend a 8.25? The rearend does not come with axels or brake hardware and I bet both of these are different between a 8.25 and 9.25 rearend. Things to check on; axel tube diameter, wheel bearing size, axels thickness, number of splines on axel.

If you have a 8.25 you should be OK, if you have the 9.25 better check it out.

Both my current axle and the one I'm looking at are 8.25, so hopefully everything should swap out nicely.

One more question however. The new axle I'm looking at has a 4 bolt flange and yoke setup at the differential, whereas my current driveshaft attaches with a u-joint and yoke. How easy would it be to swap the yoke out of my current differential into the new one, and would it even work at all?
