Subject: Freeze Plugs IP: Logged
Message: I have a freeze plug on my 98 dakota leaking and progressively getting worse. After talking to a few people they said it was no big deal to replace this as long as it is easy to get to. Does anyone have any input.
Thanks

Message: Drain the block > Most punch a hole in the plug and pry out > Over the years I found out it is to easy to push the plug into the block > Bad problem then > I use a drill the size of the punch coated with axle grease to retain metal shavings > Axle grease is the really thick stuff > Not wheel bearing grease > Be carefull not to push the drill beyond the hole you make with it or you will drag the metal off inside the block removing it > Important is to have a really sharp drill bit > Easy really > Then tap in the new one being sure it goes on straight or it also will leak

Message: Replace them all now. I have one that did the same thing, though I had it fixed, then I blew one at 70 mph, on a 103 degree day, and almost lost my motor. The plugs should not be aluminum like they are, get brass or stainless steel. Do it now or be sorry, cause if one looks bad there is probably another one looking worse, and there are some on the back of the motor you can't see, also they rot out from the inside, so what you see is the lease damage...don't wait just do it.
