Message: HELP! Just wondering if dropping in a 318 into my '93 which currently has a 3.9 is a big task. Just got this truck and it looks sweet but the motor has over 200k miles on it and will need a motor soon. I have been told that a 318 will pretty much drop right in? Any other V8 suggestions? Thanks!

Message: Good luck getting answers on this site. I want to do the same thing, from what I am told the Throttle body body and computer are the hardest tasks that you will have, I think i am going to go with a carberated motor and new transmition. I am even considering a Small Block Chevy motor like they do with jeeps. Let me know if you find anything out my email is jevanof@yahoo.com

Now,
Matt, yes it is pretty much a drop-in, try for same yr motor & comp as your truck and add wiring for the 2 extra injectors.
jevanoff, if you want something besides a mopar motor, do some research on a BUICK 455. something from the yr 69-70, w/ factory 10.25:1 comp, rated @ 350hp and 510ftlbs of torque @ 2800rpm and the weight of a chevy smallblock.
can you say "tire smoke"?

Message: Thanks for the replies! I am thinking that I would also like to go with carb motor and def a new trans. Isn't the big block quite a project to put into this truck? I would love to drop a BB into this thing and let her rip but it seems as though the parts are harder to come by than the small blocks? And money is an issue for me. I don't have an unlimited budget to work with.

Message: parts are cheaper for big blocks than magnums... end of story.
and people will tell ya about how you're gonna be too nose heavy with a BB... well a 400 BB is only 60 lbs heavier than a 360. Trade the cast iron intake for an aluminum and you're down to 30 lbs. Swap the cast water pump for an aluminum and you just about break even...
440's are a little over 100 lbs heavier than a 360 though.
another fact... BB heads weigh less than SB heads (magnum or L/A). Shorter head and bigger cooling passages.
my motor is very mild and put down 302 rwhp and 398 rwtq a week ago. Mild being stock heads, valves, pistons, rods, crank, bore.. etc etc.
i'm very happy with it but i'm gonna be shooting for a little more in the future.
Matt,
it was a project to put a big block in my genIII (97-04) dakota... but with your genII, you can go spend $400 on brackets from www.engine-swap.com and any mopar B or R/B motor will bolt in... cannot get any easier.

Message: Shouldn't take you much more than an afternoon with just an adjustable wrench and a phillips screwdriver. Replace the timing chain gears with some nylon ones before you put the 5.2 in.

Message: IntenseDak39,
What year 400 did you pick for your truck and why? I am pretty knew, no check that, really knew to Dodge except helping my friend way back in high school work on his Dart Swinger which had a 340. I would think that a 400 would be easier to come by than a 440 for a reasonable price? Could you use a 400 or 440 out of an older Dodge motorhome or are their big differences in the engines used in the older mopars?
Thanks for all the help guys!

Message: all 400's are the same basic form. Same low compression, same flowing heads (most were 452's), same mounts.. etc etc
the 72-73 used a heavier metal so theoretically it's stronger.. but even the later models can support up to 600-700 hp and not crack.
mines a 76.
