Subject: Should a 5sp feel loose at the stick? IP: Logged
Message: Gotta quick question. I have a 2004 Dak 5sp with the 3.7L with 13,000 mi. I'm sure it's normal as it gets broken in, but some of the gears especially 3rd have a bit of play in them. It stays in gear just fine but if you move the shifter it seems to be a little loose. Anyone else with a 5sp have it too?

Message: my '00 w/ 46,000 on it the stick is a little sloppy but i wouldn't call it loose. it's sloppier than any other manual i've owned.
hell, you got some warranty there bring it in and see what they say. even though the dealer will prolly say it's fine even if you could pull the shift out of the trans! LOL

Message: update, just for grins i went out to check mine. in 3rd with the truck parked, the shift moves a total of 1" side to side. i measured this at the end of the stick so i am sure it's a very small amount at the trans.

Message: Yeah, mine moves about an inch also in 3rd which seems to have the most play. Even in gear and moving it still has some "wiggle" to it. Oh well...I'm sure it's nothing to worry about...I hope! :o)
Thanks, Seth

Message: Just like daddio said,, you are probably looking at the ball end of the shifter when you are moving it, this translates into a very little down under the truck. Also, do not forget that there are linkages and these will wear a bit in time. So a little bit of "play" should not be a problem. When you start having a hard time getting it into gear, or when it starts popping out is when you need to look into it much closer.
