Message: Hey everyone,
Just yesterday I noticed my truck was shaking as I was in the intersection waiting to make a left turn. It felt almost like it was going to stall, but the RPMs seemed stable. I didn't think much of it and then this morning when I started driving to work it was shaking like crazy... drove a few KMs and it didn't go away. It feels like maybe the engine is starving for gas... (not sure) it shakes when stopped so I know it's not the tires or transmission. Any ideas?
2002 SXT
V6
80,000 km
I've also never changed my spark plugs??
Thanks!

Message: Thanks guys! You're right. I actually ended up taking my truck in for service and I got new spark plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires etc.
Apparantly my engine light was on and giving the code for this problem, but I ignored it BECAUSE my engine light has been on for two years constantly giving me the "air leak in fuel system" code. IE. gas cap not tight enough - even when it is. This is the one thing that I hate about my Dak. That stupid code!

Message: Maybe....it's not the "stupid code"...but the "stupid person" looking at the stupid check engine that wont go have the stupid thing fixed.
Ya think?
When was the last time you did any stupid maintenance on the stupid truck?

Message: The last time I did maintenance was two weeks ago. My mechanic turned off the engine light and low and behold the first time I pumped gas it came back on. It cannot be fixed, even with a new gas cap - it doesn't change!
The problem isn't with me, it's with the budget gas cap that comes on the 2002 Dakota.

Message: That doesn't mean the problem can't be fixed. If a known good gas cap doesn't fix the problem, the problem may lie elsewhere. The gas caps aren't all bad !

Message: listen to kowalski... it could be a leaking tube... theres a few connections elsewhere besides just at the cap... try to use another cap, and then start looking at the fill tube, theres a few hose clamps on that thing too... otherwise, I suggest getting one of those actron scanners, so you can clear your own codes so you won;t end up in this position again. Do you turn off the truck while filling up? even that could read that code... Just keep up on your routine maintanence or you'll run that thing into the ground....

Message: Good point about shutting engine off when refueling, R/T . The guys at work didn't bother to do that while fueling the company truck; with a Chevy it shuts down the whole dash and they had to take it to the dealer to be reset !

Message: Idle air control - it's in the back of the throttle body; you have to take TB off to clean it, don't twist the plunger or you'll screw it up.
