Subject: Power Steering Troubles IP: Logged
Message: Wife has a 2001 Duango, same set-up as my 2000 dakota with a 4.7 L V-8, but she was complaining about her steering was hard turning. So i took the Durango for a drive and sure enuf....When driving slow of course straight no problems but you get about 1/4 turn and its a hard spot to turn. i check the fluid and it was to the ADD line. so i added fluid, still the same problem?? Do you think the pump went out, cause it was low fluid?? why would it just loose fluid all of a sudden?? well any ideas would be great....how hard to replace the pump?

Message: I was having a similar problem with my '97 5.2 Dakota. At low rpms the power steering would cut out. I added fluid, made sure the belt was catching, pulley turning, etc. Make sure all the zerks have been lubed on the rack and pinion. After that I couldn't think of anything else besides the pump, so I went ahead and replaced it.
Not a very hard job really, you'll need to rent a pulley puller from autozone or something, other than that you'll just need the basic sockets, wrenches, etc. For me it was about a 5 hour job on a saturday afternoon
** '97 Dakota 5.2L 4x4 w/3.55(my best ebay purchase yet) ** ** Homebrew CIA, Dynomax Catback, March Underdrive Pulleys, Transgo Kit ** ** Borg Warner Brass Cap/Rotor to Taylor 8mm wires to NGK plugs ** ** Homebrew dual electric fan setup with 180* thermostat ** ** Sitting on BFG 31 x 10.50's ** ** Tons more once I'm not a poor college student :) **

Message: I had a similar problem too. After it was warmed up a bit it would growl and be hard to turn. I ended up taking a suction gun and sucking all the fluid I could out of the reservoir and refilling it with ATF+4. My fluid was a little on the low side too and was not in the best of condition either.
That fixed the problem for about 15000 miles then it came back a bit so I just take the suction gun to it every 8-10k miles or so and change the reservoir fluid. Problem has not came back since.
Ideally though you would probably want disconnect the R&P hose line to get the whole system cleared out.
