Subject: 1998 5.2 radiator drain
IP: Logged

Message:
Greetings, All:

I need to replace my 1998 5.2 thermostat gasket. The radiator drain turned only 1/4 turn and nothing came out.

So I used the search feature and found lots of old threads explaining that the new-fangled 1/4 turn drain is a lousy design and I should not even try to use it. No problem -- I'll siphon the radiator.

But which way is the handle of the drain supposed to be when the drain is closed? I found it in the vertical position, which I would have guessed to be the drain position -- based on my own brand of simple logic. I'm worried the previous owner might have tried the drain also, and left it in the open position. If so, then one day it might decide to flow! Anybody know for sure -- vertical or horizontal to be safely closed?

My 98 needs about 1/2 a turn to drain. kinda tight though. drain stays the same position.

I have a '97 5.2 and have tried for my life to get the petcock to work on the bottom of the radiator to no avail. I finally just gave up on it and popped off the lower radiator hose. Makes a bit more of a mess but whatever.
