Subject: Sucking out all electrical power IP: Logged
Message: '96 3.9 4X4. I can charge the battery and run great for an hour or so. After that, systems become sluggish and eventually everything shuts down. Please don't tell me I have a short...I've been over every inch of wiring. Battery and alternator bench test as good. Any ideas appreciated.

Message: Here's how I would troubleshoot this:
Verify that the alternator really is charging the battery and creating power when the engine is running - do this by starting the engine and then disconnecting the battery. If the engine dies, it means it was running off the battery, not the alternator. Not sure about the '96 model but if the alternator tests good on a bench, see if there's a fusible link somewhere between the alternator and battery or alternator and wherever it connects to the electrical system. (sometimes on the firewall)
Have Fun!

Message: Or while engine is running, hook volt meter to
battery and with head lights and heater blower
turned on, you should see around 14 on the volt
meter. You should be able to *hear* the alternator
weining (working) trying to charge the battery.
If you see 12 or less volts, your system is not
charging even if it did bench test ok.
Good luck... Let us know what you find..
