Subject: Found this in my differential???
IP: Logged

Message:
So there I was, changing the oil in my differential on this beautiful friday afternoon when I came across this piece sitting in the bottom of the housing. Looks as if it broke off somewhere inside. Anyone have any idea what it is or how big of a deal it is that I just found it sitting in the bottom of the differential housing?

I changed mine once, found a piece of metal that looked like a bullet, not the casing, just the tip. It had some circular marks around it.

Is your rear end a posi unit?? Cause that looks like a part of the clutch disc(in the posi) spring. Possibly not a good situation. Lotsa burning of the tires eh??

It's obvious you must have money coming out your rear end.

I'd be tempted to drop the transmission and oil pan after that...$$$

To change the subject a little, I took my new Dakota to the dealer shortly after I got it for a noise inside the tire. When they pulled the tire off the rim they found a penny inside. Assembly line games no doubt.

It's not a posi or trak lok or anything, it's a standard open diff, 8.25. I thought it looked like some kind of a retainer ring or something, but I have no idea how long it's been in there like that. The last time i changed the oil was last spring, so I haven't been in there for about a year. Everything seems to be driving just fine though, but who knows :/

Whoever made the joke about money coming out my rear end......Good one!

it doesnt look like anything from the center section.

I've had mine apart a lot of times and nothing like that.

parts you have in there:

Carrier
Ring Gear
Ring Gear Bolts
Pinion Gear
Pinion Shaft
Pinion Retainer Bolt
C-Clips
Axles
Bearings/Races
Retaining Caps/Bolts
Adjusters
Adjuster Locks/Bolts
Spider Gears
Shims

nothing comes to mind when looking at that piece.. and even the factory Trac Lok doesnt have any springs... just clutch packs.

That piece is a part of a Trak-Lok clutch retaining clip, I found something similar in my 2004 Ram 1500 9.25 axle after only 1 year of 'easy' driving, no wheel spinning etc.

Searched the internet and found:

http://dtw.truckmoxie.com/forums/

found pictures of the clips and the complete assy.
in the GEARS section of forum.

it seems it's a 'common' problem with this axle,
can cause major damage if this gets stuck in the gears,
can cause rear wheels to lock up while driving too..
Guess some of us are 'lucky' to just find it
sitting on the bottom of the diff case
without any further damage.

Even if my truck is still under warranty,
(Dodge fixes problem with same parts..)
I just ordered a Powertrax locker to get rid
this 'problem waiting to happen' factory LSD..

IntenseDak39, yes I saw in
his post and wondered..

maybe previous owner didn't mention
mods to axle, checking the VIN codes
would confirm if truck originaly came
with the LSD option.

here is a link to a cluchpack photo
where you can see this clip, near him
idex finger.

hope this works, just copy/paste in the adresss box.

neither link worked..

i've got a 8.25 trac lok in the closet.. i'll go check that clip out on it and see. I Busted mine too.. lol

only thing i did was break the two spider gears the pinion shaft goes thru

it turned it into a VERY open differential.. lol

It most definitely is not a trac lok. It's the biggest one-wheeled wonder ever. I've had the back tires off the ground, and sure enough they spin opposite directions. It's an open diff, no doubt about it. Thanks for all the replies fellas.

Yeah, definitely glad that didn't end up getting caught in the gears somewhere, that would have been nasty!

hmm.. was working ok an hour ago but now I see
it's not, maybe some server problems,
try a little later.

it's not a direct link you click on,
you have to copy/paste the 'link'
in your address space.

I took my '01 QC in for a rear diff service about a year ago (59k) and the service advisor at dealership pulled me back to show me that a piece of my clutch backing (LSD) was laying in the bottom of the pumpkin. At least it was caught before anymore damage happened and left me stranded or something. I had to have the rear diff replaced at a cost of $1200! Thank God it was covered by the extended warranty (60k) I had purchased when I bought the truck. Two weeks later I started to hear a 'howl' at low speeds from rear end and had to have the pinion bearings replaced (again under warranty). I know the damage was caused by aggressive driving, and feel fortunate that I was able to get the work done right before the warranty expired. The extended warranty I purchased actually paid for itself!

I found the same thing in mine right after my warantee ran out at 36K...stuck to the magnet in the bottom of my 9.25" w/ factory LSD...

I would LOVE to swap to 3.92 gears sometime, which I may, and I'll probably use a different LSD at the same time. Especially if this part is part of the factory LSD.

Kaderdak,

if that got inbetween the ring and pinion, it would just smash it into little pieces...

it takes a lot to fudge up a ring and pinion.

my pinion shaft retaining bolt broke on me and the pinion shaft came out while i was going about 40 mph. Next thing i know is i hear this huge "BOOOM" from under my truck and i have no forward motion... just whatever momentum i had left.

turns out the pinion shaft worked it's way loose and hit the pinion gear. Now imagine the force that was applied going 40 mph. The pinion shaft was bent over where it stuck out of the carrier and the pinion just had a little knick on one of the teeth.

I was pretty darn amazed!

now it's welded rearend for me.. lol
