Subject: rear end service

Hello

I remember about a year ago I took my Dakota to the dealership for an oil change....the guy asked me If i wanted a rear end service done to my truck also...he said that Dakotas are supposed to have a rear end service every 3,000 miles or so.....Is this true? That was the only time i have had it done.
Any reply would be appreciated..thanks

According to my owner's manual it is a 12,000 mile service interval for my 2002 QC. I suspect yours is the same or close.

Is sounds to me that the service advisor was trying to generate income at your expense.

BTW - I get mine done every 12K for $40 (75w oil and labor) along with $7 for the LSD addative. I know this very low price, but when the dealer quoted me well over $100 for the same service I politely said, "no thank-you".

yeah...the service dude at my dealer said the same thing... that Limited slip diff's should be serviced at 3000 miles and the cost would be about $100.
I'm considering doing it myself. Anyone know how difficult/messy it is?

that advisor is a moron. swap it to synthetic then dont worry about it for another 30k. my 04 came with synthetic and the manual says to change the fluid every 15k for sever service then goes on to say if the truck is not subjected to severe service than that fluid is good for 100k. 3k is crazy, he11 i dont even change my oil that much

Are you sure your Dak came with synt.in the rear?
I have an o4 QC with Trailer Tow and HD everything. My manual said if the Dak was to be used to tow to replace rear fluid with Synt.
I know on wife's Jeep the metal tag on the rear diff. says it has synt. from factory. My Dak had no other tag other than gearing.

I changed mine the easy way.... used a small pump to drain the pumpkin and Mobil 1 makes a bottle that you can fill it back up easily with.

Or if you don't have a small pump just do it the regular way and take the 10 (or 12) bolts out of the cover and pry it off, just make sure you have an oil pan underneath your diff. Clean it out good, wipe all the shavings off the magnet, new gasket/rtv sealant on the cover and put it back on. Refill with new fluid just to the level of the check plug.
