Subject: Another Fan Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I was thinking about adding a electric fan to my 99 5.2 SLT. Right now all it has is the clutch fan. What I want to do is add a single fan (small) that will come on only when the A/C is turned on. Is this a hard mod to do? Can anyone who has done this help me out with some basic instructions? I still want to keep the clutch fan.

Thanks,

if you're lucky, your rad may have mounts for a factory fan. then you could get one for '00-up from the boneyard and all you'd have to do is wire in a thermal switch and relay which you can buy from Advance Auto.

I have a '97 5.2 and have totally removed the clutch fan. I have both a 16" and 12" black magic fan hooked up. The are really easy to mount to the radiator with some basic zipties. I have both mine wired to a switch in the dash, I just watch my temp guage and turn them on when I'm in traffic or something like that. Most of the driving I do in highway anyway, so I don't use the fans very much at all. I found it totally pointless to have a clutch fan for as rarely as I ever even need to turn on my electric fans.

Did you notice any improvement in gas mileage after you got rid of the clutch fan?

Possibly, but my right foot is solid lead, so I'd never know. Interstate driving I usually get around 18 on a good day though, It town, stoplight to stoplight, probably around 7 :)

To answer your question ZoSo, if you want to add
a electric fan and only have it come on while the
compressor is running, just tap into the clutch
wire. Feed that into a relay you will need to add.
When the air cond clutch snaps in, the relay you
add will also snap in. The N.O. contact on the
added relay will now bring in battery power to
your new fan. Don't forget to fuse the system!

If this is greek to you ZoSo, get some help from
a friend that knows a little about electricial.
You don't need to add a thermal switch either.
All you care about is turning the fan ON when
the compressor is running and OFF when not.
Simple, easy and to the point.

Thanks RadioMan,

That was a simple and strait to the point answer I was looking for. I figured it would be something as simple as that, but it never hurts to ask. My dad's 03 Durango and my wife's 99 Cheby both have a fan that comes on when the A/C it turned on.

I just figured that my 99 Dak should also have this mod (it gets rather hot here in the summers).

I found the BlackMagic 150 doesn't move enough air for the a/c. Mine shuts down after 5 min. running, with the fan on and moving down the road.
What other fan can install to cure this?
I have blown two sets of a/c seals on the compressor already.
