Subject: Clicking Noise At 70+ MPH IP: Logged
Message: I am going to take my 2002 Dodge Dakota (4.7l, 4x4, auto) in to the dealership since its still covered under warranty.
However, I like going in there knowing what needs to be fixed so that I dont getthe mechanic to "fix" the wrong problem like they did twice previously.
Anyways, my truck has always made this clicking noise whenever I went past 70MPH since I bought it used last summer. I mainly ignored it, because I always had music going, however I was on vacation with a bunch of people last weekend, and everyone made a comment asking what it was.
Anyone heard of this click before? What causes it and how do you fix it? It is entirely random, so I doubt it is timing or spark related. My friend suggested its a vent that is flapping open, which is BS, because my Uncle's 2001 doesn't do it.
I recorded it on my PDA, so here is the link.

It is the clicking noise that you hear in the background.

Message: Hard to hear what it is from the audio clip, but I had a couple of noises on my 00 CC that drove me nuts until I found and fixed them.
1- Overhead console rattled and clicked like a mofo at freeway speeds or if I hit a bump, I pulled it down and soundproofed it.
2- Driver side door lock manual pull tab, would click and make an annoying vibrating noise at freeway speeds. Never fixed it because I always forgot about it, I just stuck a folded peice of paper in the pull tab to wedge it in tight.
3- Grounding wire from body to exhaust was broken off exhaust the exhaust. This one sounded something like the audio clip you have, but it's realy hard to say if it's the same noise. The wire would flop around at high speeds and hit the body making a tapping noise.
Do you know what part of the truck the noise is coming from, engine, transmission, front, rear, outside, inside???

Message: Sorry. It sounds like it is coming from either the engine or tranny area. Inside the cab, it seems to be localized near the center of the dash towards the center/floor area.

sorry, I could'nt resist. it sounds like something flaping in the breeze to me. I would get under,in, around every place you can. and see if you can find something loose.

Message: Yeah, make sure it's not something stupid before you take it to the stealership.
I got an 03 QC 4 months ago and it had a popping noise up front. I thought bad upper ball joints and to heck with me looking at it,,, that's what a waranty is for.
Come to find out the popping noise was caused by a beer bottle the previous owner put in the front left fender well, it would roll over and smack the fender every time the truck turned :-(
I found out really quick that the Dodge does not warranty the diagnosis of drunk b@st@rds that forgot where they left thier last beer. Cost me $70 where if I had spent some time looking at the problem I could have figured it out.
