Subject: Heater core leak! IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if anybody could possible give me some advice, i have a 2000 quad cab and have a possible cracked heater core, i know this because i have been getting coolant puddles all over my passenger side floor mat, a one time only, fogging of the windows and that horid smell of burnt coolant in the cab, my truck never seems to overheat and is never low on coolant, i added some stop leak into my rad but i still get that coolant smell, what i was wondering is there anyway to get rid of that smell or will i have to replace my carpet? and also will this stop leak fix, do the trick or will i have to replace my heater core? any help on this matter would be great.

Message: Thanks for the reply Jay, i think your right about changing my heater core, i guess i have to bite the bullet and just take the time to fix it myself, the dealer wanted way to much to fix it 800 bucks, i even tried the little shops but the lowest is still 500 bucks so after reading previous postes i am going to try and do it myself.

Message: Since winter is over, you could bypass the heater core for the summer. This will give you more time to fix it.

Message: The hoses run through the firewall on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The 2 connections you see are both ends of the heater core loop. Run a hose between both connection points on the motor. Make sure you get the heater core replaced before it gets cold again 'cause changing it in the cold sucks even worse.

Message: I had my heater core replaced,($500.00). The mechanic that did it said it was real bitch. If you do it yourself you may want to kind of reassemble the dash on the bench so you know where the 10,000 screws go when you reassemble. If you by-pass the heater core, you will probably still get smell because of the fluid in the heater duct. You may have to get under the dash, remove duct and wash out?

Message: Hey burnrn do a search on this site for it, there are lots of people that have had the same problem, as far as a recall i'm not to sure that, that will happen look how long it took for DC to recall the ball joints, lol anyhoo i've been ripping my dash apart here for the last couple of hours here but now it's getting dark so i'm going in for some beer, went to the dealer to inquire about a mopar heater core? and they wanted 132 beans for it, i then went to napa and got one for 36 beans, wich they over at napa say is better.

Message: kjs.... before you start pulling 10,000 screws - STOP. Izzy did a write up ( http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/gen/11292.html ) that I found AFTER I made that mistake. It still takes time but you don't need to pull the plastic wrap off the dash - only the top, (7) nuts, 6 or seven harnesses and some time... (4) nuts in the engine bay side of the firewall... right now tring to see if I can crack the core/evaporator case w/o draining the A/C.
