I just had the oil changed at the dealer 3 days ago on my 02 dakota 4.7. Last night the motor started smokin and just plum quit. I checked the oil and not a drop in ther. Looked under it this morning and there is no drain plug in the oil pan. I bought a new plug and put in fresh oil but it is to late.......the motor is a knocking.........so back to the dealer........naturally they told me not under warranty. I am fed up with Dodge Service.

What, didn't the low oil pressure light stay on when you were driving?

It would take a lot less than 3 days to seize. I doubt your dealer is respoansible for this one. Don't you check your oil after an oil change? Did you notice a puddle of oil under the truck at any point? Can you backtrack and check for one?

Maybe you are the victim of sabotage. I did that to a dickhead in high school. I drained all the oil from his car and watched as he drove about 15 feet and blew the motor.

That was sweet!!

if the dealer changed the oil and didn't tighten the plug enough for it to fall out, i'd say they better warranty it.

a few years back a freind had his oil changed at some gas station and they cross threaded the oil filter. needless to say about 3 days later he was back at that station and was getting a new engine installed free of charge.

The plug shouldn't have fallen out. Sounds like their tech didn't tighten it enough and it worked it's way out after a couple of days. I would say it's their problem, not yours. Start making a lot of noise. Dodge dealers are very cautious of things that will affect their 5-star rating with DC. Ask to speak with a district rep. Worse case, get a lawyer. You should be able to fight them on this. Make sure you hold on to all your receipts.

The one problem I see here is you replaced the plug and oil losing your proof of oil being lost > Should have left it sit or got a wrecker to haul it to the stealer > Backtrackinging most likely well be fruitless > I'd bet you lost the plug on the fly and most likely just shortly prior to engine stall > needle in a haystack deal here >> About all you can do is show reciept (DON"T LET THEM HAVE IT) , copy it for them > Them make your phone calls if no satisfaction from dealer > Be sure they are away of your intentions > At times they change there tune if they know your going to upset there STARS

All the noise in the world won't affect their rating. It's a DC thing. All they'll say is "prove it's our fault and we'll gladly replace the engine".

Good luck with that. 3 days is a long time. Lesson here>>>always check the work that others do to your vehicle, especially something as simple as an oil change.

Personally, I believe that the chimp...I mean Technician, forgot to tighten the plug. I think you got screwed over.

I'm just playing Devils Advocate here because I've dealt with pretty well the worst 5* dealer in the world and I know that there is nothing you can do to affect their rating and they'll probably laugh at you.

Good luck.

A buddy of mine that is a Toyota Master Tech says they replace about a 1/2 dozen engines a year that blew due to quick lube joints. These qucik lube shops sometimes forget to tighten the drain plug, but more often is they forget to make sure that the old oil filter gasket didn't stick to the block before installing the new filter. When that happens you get an oil leak that can take a few days before the level gets down enough to blow the engine. If the drain plug is loose it can take a few days to fall off, but in most cases it will fall off eventually.

Wow, that does suck.

Glad I do all my own changes-mobil 1 true synthetic.

I'd still try If I were you. As mentioned, you tried and rectify someone elses mistake, knda covering for them by accident, with the new plug and oil.

Good luck, try your insurance also!

I totally agree with the dealer, the blown engine shouldn't be covered under warranty,,,, it should be covered by thier liability insurance.

Dodge isn't responsible for making a bad engine, the dealership is responsible for hiring a dumb tech who forgot to tighten the drain plug.

In the end it might be covered as a warranty repair, but it's not because you got a bad Dodge engine.

Funny thing, I have never felt comfortable taking my 00 or 03 Dak's to my local 5* dealers service dept. I always feel like they are trying to skrew me, it takes multiple trips to have problems resolved or I have to fix them myself.

Well here is the follow up. The dealer said they will cover labor and 30% of the cost of the new motor.....I am still arguing with them for the full amount.

I will keep you all posted

to me that shows they admit at least some fault on their part. now you just got to get them to take full responsibility. keep at 'em. and good luck.

If they are paying for the repair they should foot the entire bill, heck they have already admitted guilt by offering to pay for a majority of the repair.

I wonder, is the dealer covering the portion of the repair Dodge will reimburse, leaving you to pay for the tech's labor and profit on the new engine? I bet they talked it up to you like they were doing you a big favor by covering the labor and 30% of the engine.

I had a wierd experience recently, dealer worked on truck at 35,500 miles and didn't fix the problem. Took it back couple of days later at 36,500 miles to have the origional problem fixed,,, again. Only after some complaining they paid for 50% of the 7/70 deductable. They seemed like they were doing me a huge favor, when in actuallity the truck should have been repaired for free since the origional proglem was not repaired several days earlier.

My fiasco was only $50 and not worth arguing over any more, but your sutuation is more like $2-4K. Bite off a peice of thier azz and don't hand it back until they pay for the entire repair.

Oh! You should be receiving a survey in a couple of days from Daimler Chrysler asking you about how your receint service went.... Have Fun LOL
