Subject: Tranny surges at hwy speeds (45rfe)

Great forum guys and gals! Now to my problem. I have a 2000 dakota QC 4.7/45rfe. My problem is that while traveling down the road with the cruise on, my tranny seems to "slip" every so often. I thought maybe it was the brake switch (cutting out tcc), but wasnt it. The only thing i can think of is it feels like the lock-up converter is slipping. Doesnt change when the O/D is off either, and only seems to happen from about 50mph and up. Anyone else have this problem before?
Also, i have read some posts on the TMR mod. Has anyone had any trouble with the idiot light coming on after doing this? Any help with EITHER of these would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS
TONY

Just for correction, what i mean by "slipping" is that the RPM's actually go up 200 or 300 then drop back to normal, and i never touch the gas. Anyone know anything about the accumulator plate problem? Could this have any affect on this?
THANKS AGAIN
TONY

First...thanks for the reply...havent thought of the TPS. Dont know how it could explain the surging though, but im no great mechanic. Could you maybe elaborate some more on why you think the TPS?
THANKS

I have to agree it's the TPS. I had the exact same problem with my '00 Dakota. What is happening to you (why it seems like it's slipping)is the torque converter is going in and out of lock up (which is about a 200 - 300 RPM difference) because the TPS is sending a sparatic signal to the TCM. Since the 45rfe tranny is electronic, along with other engine sensors it also uses the TPS to select when the torque converter goes in to lock up. In my truck it got so bad that the slightest bump in the road would make my converter unlock. At the time I didn't notice any difference in the way my truck ran, just that the converter was acting funny. Once I replaced the TPS, not only did the tranny shift much better overall, but my Dakota actually ran smoother all across the throttle range. At the time the TPS was only available at Dodge, but that may have changed by now.

Thanks for the input guys...i read up on the TPS, and to be honest...it never crossed my mind. I just figured i had a tranny problem. Got a new TPS sensor coming from the dealer tomorrow. I'll let everyone know how it went. Also, gonna do the TMS mod after i do the TPS. I want to get the tranny right before i do anything to it. By the way, has anyone tried the transgo shift kit? Looks like more of a repair kit than anything.
THANKS

Ive been having the exact same problem, looks like somebody beat me to the post. I was gettin worried about it, thinking my tranny was starting to slip. But it makes sense now because lately ive been having the revving problem when the truck is idling.

Just and update...put the TPS in this morning..have driven about 40 miles so far, and have had no problems. I did notice that the shift from 3rd to 4th now is much more noticeable than before. I am fixing to go and do the TMS mod and see if it is better. Thanks to everyone for the help. I am going on a pretty good trip this weekend, and if it is still doing it, i should know for sure by then. Either way, i will let everyone know...thanks guys

OK..did the TMS mod today...WOW...what a noticeable difference in the shifting! I cant believe that one little cut wire could change the way my truck runs and drives...i love it...also, no service lights are on. Truck has much firmer, more positive shifts, and it seems to be shifting at a slightly higher rpm than before. GREAT improvement over stock! Thanks again people!

Call me stupid, but I didn't realize we had Torque managment on these...

Would you be so kind as to tell me where and which wire I have to snip? Maybe I'll put a little switch on it...

Hmm hmm hmm...
Thanks!

If you have an 03, dont worry..yours is made in the PCM and you cant do this, otherwise, here goes.

Find you TCM..its the module mounted right behind the RH headlamp. You will have to remove the airbox to give you room to get to the connector. I think the connector is held with an 8MM bolt. Remove the bolt and the connector will come off. If you look at the connector, there are 60pins. 10 rows side by side, and three rows down. One side of the connector has a raised section that kind of tapers down. This will be the top...if you look at the top 10 pins on the left side, go to number 10. The wire on my truck was yellow with a light green stripe. This was the TMS wire. Just cut it (far enough back you can reconnect it), tape it up, wire a switch, or whatever. I would suggest not doing the switch. I fear that trying to turn it on while driving may turn on the check engine light. Anyways, let me know if you need anymore help.
THANKS

Just a quick update. been a few days and several miles now, and i seem to have cured the "slipping" problem with the TPS sensor. I am gonna be on about a 300 mile trip tomorrow, and i will know for sure, but i am confident right now that the problem is solved. Thanks again for the info.
As far as the TMS mod goes, i do NOT want to put in a switch! I NEVER want to go back to the old way! Thanks for the great info on this board. I will be signing up for a lifetime membership in the next week or so thanks to you guys

Glad to hear that the TPS solved your problem. I have yet to do the TMS mod. Maybe I'll have to give that a try.
