I bought my 1998 Dodge Dakota brand new and have never had a problem with it. Now there is a noise coming from the rear brakes that sounds like someone hitting a hollow log with a piece of wood---for lack of a better description. It starts when the brakes are applied. I took the truck to the dealership and the mechanic road tested it and said he couldn't hear anything. I asked him how he could NOT hear that sound. It is so apparent that people in thier yard or walking turn and look at the truck. Anyway, the problem persists and the dealership is denying there is a problem. The truck only has 29970 miles on it--yes I am a grandma that drives very little as I work only 4 blocks from home. I don't run up on stop signs and slam on the brakes either. What could cause this noise I keep hearing?

I'd have to say the best I can suggest is to get a second opinion, from another shop.. many reputible shops have mechs and techs just as good, if not better than the stealerships... as they have to deal with many different types of vehicles, and not just the new vehicles taht the dealers are used to just doing warranty work on. Goodyear, Pep boys, and many other shops do a free brake inspection, and will possibly be able to ride with you, or on their own, to figure this out.
from my personal expeirence ( I am a tech for goodyear, actually) I'd say that either there is a problem not with the brakes, but possibly with a U joint, or in the suspension. with the limits of doing a "diagnosis" over the net, I can't be sure, especially since the problem is a difficult one to describe. WHY the dealer may be missing it, is due to the fact that you probably drive differently then the person that drove it, see if ( if you wnat them to look at it) if they will ride with you, since its under warranty, they should be fixing it for you, for free unless you are responsible for the damage.

My REAR brakes got noisy on my Dak before I even hit 10k miles!
It happens the most when I back up and lightly touch the brakes I get a weird howl.

Having worked on cars for years, even in a few shops, I knew a few tricks.

Here's the deal. if someone LOOKS at your brakes they could physically be fine. No safety issues, but you get some weird almost HARMONIC noise from the brakes.

What I do to fix my rear brake noise is pull the caliper and let the rotors spin (in gear with the truck on safty stands and wheel chaulks). Then i take a rotory grinder tool with a fine sanding wheel on it and make a crosshatch type of effect on the rotors by running the rotory wheel back and forth each side of the rotor while it turns.
That will make all the noise go away until the rotor gets glazed again.

Some vehicles are noisier than others so I've known this trick and it worked on my Dak. In fact I'm due to do it again.

Get a shop to pull your rotors and run them on their brake lathe while they run the rotory on them. It shouldn't cost too much.
You may even find a mechanic who knows how to do this already.
