I have a 89 3.9 4x4 Auto and I'm wondering the same thing I think mine is A500

The '89 should work if you have the A500. That tranny design continued on for several years.
The '87 would have a 3-speed auto if it's an auto. I'm thinkin' the lack of an overdrive will require an adjustment. Gonna have to look at that a bit. On the 2WD units, it just required a longer driveshaft and a slightly different mount for the tranny crossmember on the 3 speed autos. It's certainly do-able to swap an OD unit into an '87. Just personally haven't dealt with the 4WD setup.

I hope this isnt a repeat message when I clicked to post I got the cant do that page on my computer??? Any way I have a 89 dakota 4x4 sport conv.I'm not (Alex F.) and it has the a500 and it broke going down the road at 65mph (loud clank &rpms went way up) now it does the first three gears just fine no fourth though I looked into another a500 very pricey and I just wondered if a pre a5oo would bolt up.I would guess I would need the transfer with it I've been reading this site for a few days and you give pretty good advise. Thanks for the help

I have a complete drivetrain for an 89 4x4 dak v6 auto, minus the front axle for sale. I originally purchased it to replace the 4cyl in my 88 dak 2x4, but to many things were needed to do the swap. Things like new motor mounts, new tail shaft for auto since mine was a stick, or new bell housing for the stick, electric fuel pump (injected v6 vs carb 4cyl)etc.. Got to be too much of a headache so its been sittin for 5 yrs. The v6 and auto ran great when i pulled them, and according to the guy i bought it from the tran has a shift kit & recent rebuild. I paid $600 for everything and would like to sell all , but may be willing to sell trans & transfer seperate from v6. I'm located in Phoenix,Az if anyone is interested please e-mail me for more info.
P.s. the 88 dak 2x4 with manual tran but no motor is also for sale.
