Subject: Gas vs. standard shocks ? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99' R/T that has the stock hyd. shocks. I am considering a set of gas charged shocks. I want a smooth controllable ride - my wife says it better not get rough. What do you think the R/T will ride like w/ say a set of KYB's or equivelents? Thanx

Message: Usually, it's a pretty good deal to swap up to. If you get some that are adjustable, you can tune them to your comfort level.

Message: Do you think it has hydrolic shocks.?
My 99 had gas charged from the factory.
Unbolt the lower end on a rear shock if it extends on it's own, it is gas charged.
KYB, Bilstein, Koni, Edelbrock all good shocks.

Message: Hydro's for sure. I had them out allready. Looking for a smooth ride w/ more control than the stockers. Had KYB's on another ride and they were a tad stiff.

Message: Edlebrock IAS shocks work beautifully on street driven daks. Good control without being overly stiff. I have had them on my 97 for about 5 years now and love them. They also suck up the hard hits pretty well too.
BTW, Gas or hydro doesn't change the ride characteristics. That is a function of overall design. Pressurized gas charged shocks are used as a method to avoid the air and heat effects on the shock which can make the shock more stable with harder use. I'm not explaining it that well. Maybe you might understand it.

Message: The factory shocks are gas charged on the 97-04 Dak.
namfflow: There is as much difference in ride characteristics between Gas charged and not, as there is between bias ply tires and radials.
Pressureized shocks respond better to changing road conditions.

Message: Gas pressurization main purpose is to resist/prevent the foaming that occurs when shock fluid gets hot from use. You can build 2 shocks exactly alike with one pressurized and one not. The only difference you will see is after the shocks heat up the non-pressurized one will be soft. I do agree that in general most gas pressurized shocks do ride better, only because they are usually designed a bit better for "performance". I just wouldn't base my decision on whether pressurized or not by itself. I consider the whole design and my needs. I also agree that pressurized shocks are in general better buys these days. BTW, can you still get non-pressurized shocks?
