Subject: rack for my bike and surf board IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys I have a 01 with a tannaue cover. I was wondering if there was any type of rack for it so that I could mount my surf board and mountain bike on top of it? I have looked around on the internet and haven't seen anything like that for the dakota.

Message: The only ones I can think of are made specifically for the GT Classic by GEM which is a steel top. I wouldn't have any idea if they would work on yours. Do a web search for them. I don't know if it is still around but a few years ago there was/is a chain of stores in California that sold nothing but racks. I can't remember their name. I know, big help ain't I?

Message: Is it a hard tonneau? If it is you can mount a Yakima rack directly to it. Yakima has surfboard racks as well as bike. If its a soft tonneau, you might have to fabricate something.

Message: I have a thule rack on the roof of my '03 quad cab. Mounts to the screws holes inside the door gasket. I haul a canoe and thule box (longer bar). 2 years and no problems yet. Also tie canoe to front and back to help with updraft.
My brother has a '01 CC with a tonneau cover. He has a Vanguard ladder rack system that was given to him with the extenders for a cap/shell. Tonneau frame fits over extenders. Ladder rack bolts to extender plates. Ladder rack has cross bars which he has lowered just above the bed. He then mounts his Thule rack to the ladder rack cross bars for 2 mountain bikes and thule box. He then places his canoe on the ladder racks. Leaves the rest of bed under tonneau cover for rest of gear. When he wants a "cleaner looking" truck, the whole ladder rack system comes off easily with 8 bolts from the extenders. (15 min. solo, 5 min. with a budy) Extenders stay on.
Friend has custom fit a thule rack to his Neon 2 door and have seen a similiar set up on a Ford Ranger CC. The front of the rack is mounted (probably the same as my '03 QC) then has an extension frame from Thule that would extend over the CC. He hauls 3 bikes on his roof regularly.
Good Luck
