Message: While driving earlier this week, a check engine light came on in my truck. Took the truck to the stealership and they told me that a vacuum hose was loose on the TB. They charged me $105 for labor and parts, claiming that the vacuum hose was NOT part of my powertrain warranty (100,000 miles powertrain warranty from the factory on my dakota FYI). 3 days later, the check engine light comes on again! Took it back, and told them to fix it. They said the service manager would be speaking to me, so i stuck around. 2 hours later, they introduce me to the service manager, and the SM asks about the truck. They service desk guy takes the manager to the back room, and they talk. The service manager doesn't come back to speak to me, we just shook hands, didn't even get a chance to talk. The service guy explains that they gas cap seal was bad and the charges were $7 and NO labor! I know that a loose cap can trigger a light, but the light came on 2 days after my last fill up!
Something doesn't feel right about all this. What are your impressions.
2002 Dodge Dakota SLT+ 4x2 club cab, 69,820 miles.
Also, after having my ball joints replaced at 15,000 miles, the dealership said they were bad AGAIN! The repaired it for free, but I can't believe that the replacement Ball joints went bad in under 40,000 miles!

Message: Hmm. I may take the PCM a few cycles to pick up the problem with the gas cap seal.
The ball joint; I have no explanation for that one. But it does seem curious.

Message: Mr. Sleepy, sucks because it sounds like you got ripped off for the vacuum hose. I maybe wrong but I thought emissions warranties for a vehicle were in place for 100,000 miles or so. If the light came on then it should be an emissions problem. Next time you get a code first take it to Autozone and ask them to read the codes first. If it is something simple, you can repair it yourself. They might even help if it is easy. The gas cap can be a funny thing. It was probably just sealing and then worked itself loose and then is when the code came up. The ball joints in the daks are a funny thing. They just recently went to the "new and improved" style, so hopefully it will not be a problem anymore.

Message: Might not be covered under the powertrain warranty, but you should definitely have been covered under the 8 year/80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. I don't think a loose gas cap would take a couple cycles to show up - I've seen one loosened as a prank and it set the code right away. You might tell them you're aware of the emissions warranty and ask for a refund.

Message: I must be dealing with one of the few 5 Star DC dealerships that is actually honest. I've had the "emissions" code pop up on my previous '01 CC 4x4 SLT and the gas cap was replaced N/C to me. Service Advisor even explained to me about the 8/80 Fed emissions warranty on the second visit when they replaced the gas cap a second time.
I've taken 2 different Dak trucks into this dealership for service and I've never had any type of B.S. repairs not covered by warranty that I've read others have had. Is this type of bad repair the norm rather than the exception?

Message: Could be - while I love mopars, I've never found a dealership with a service department I really liked. Seem to hear about people being charged for stuff like this all the time here; it was a Toyota dealer who clued me into this warranty when I had a cracked y-pipe on one of their trucks with over 70,000 miles years ago.

Message: Back when I had my Sh!tsuzu pickup, the STEALership got me for over $250 to replace a reverse light fuse that also powered the PCM but was not listed as such in the dealership manual.
They tore my under-the-hood fuse box apart (jumping this wire and that wire) with no luck before eventually determining that the it was on the reverse light circuit.
When they told me what the problem was after handing me my bill, I of course pitched a fit and refused to pay. They told me that it was for the 6 hours of labor and parts to repair the fusebox. I asked why they didn't just replace the fuse in the first place and got some cock-a-mamy story about how the PCM was supposed to be on its own dedicated circuit andf that someine must have rewired the PCM to bypass a wire harness problem. Not knowing any better, I of course paid (they refused to release my truck until I did).
After totaling it a year or so later, I bought another identical to it but 2 years newer and all power everything inside (mostly due to price, the fact I already had a topper for it and rims). I cranked it up one day in the driveway and pulled the reverse light fuse and guess what......the damn truck shut off because the PCM was on teh reverse light circuit right where the wiring scematic for a 1990 Isuzu SpaceCab says its suppoersed to be (schematic coutesy of the internet).
2 years later I traded for my Dak.
