Message: It does require a special kind of bolt. A simple grade 8 is much stronger in clamping/longitudinal forces but not as strong in shear, which is really what you're after. Grade 5 is actually stronger in shear than a grade 8. Try any one of the suspension shops, or just stop by the dealer.
I know this is about to start an argument. So before you speak out be sure and read, "Nuts, Bolts, Fastners, and Plumbing Handbook", by Carroll Smith. Then you'll have a good scientific (non-intuitional/emotional) background.

Message: LOL. The full title according to BN is "Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook: Technical Guide for Racer, Restorer and Builder"
I love the title. I bet it's interesting in how he ties it all together. I'll have to pick up a copy.

Message: Carrol has a whole series of books that are truly fascinating reading. I've been modifying cars for decades, and I learned a lot of stuff just by reading those books. Not only what to do, but why you do it. There's a whole chapter on mettalurgy of bolts! He even goes as far as to say that a grade 8 bolt has no place on a car.

Message: 2000dako - problem is probably just that you're using the wrong terminology - there are no eye bolts on my '00 dak rear suspension. Try looking up suspension parts, or maybe shackle bolts.
.boB - you're right about the grade 8, we use them for shear pins in the snowblowers at work.
