Subject: lube in front differential IP: Logged
Message: I had the local dealership service my transmission, transfer case and both differentials about three months ago on my 99 Dakota 4x4 318. I just changed the oil myself a week ago. Today I noticed a drip coming from my front differential. The fluid feels like some sort of lubricant; it's slick, not tacky like water or antifreeze. Do the differentials and the transmission take the same kind of fluid? Could I be leaking oil from somewhere? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Message: Mel, yeah the fluid feels like some sort of lubricant because that's what it is. It's gear oil. They probably didn't seal it up properly, so it's leaking now. I'd take it back to the dealer and see if they'll fix it for free.
BTW, diff fluid smells bad, hard to describe.

Message: The fluid in the front and rear diffs should be the same. Pull the rubber plug off the back of the rear diff and stick your finger in. Now you know what gear oil looks/feels/smells like.

Message: Mel, do not look too long for that differential plug, I do not think your truck has one. The gear oil is a very nasty smell, and once you get it on you, it acts like good onions, it takes it a while for the smell to leave.

Message: I put on a latex glove, got a fingerfull of the lube dripping from the differential (again) but this time I smelled it. It definitely has that rotten smell, so it's almost definitely the differential gear oil. I have an appointment with the dealership tomorrow morning. I had it serviced just last December. The guy on the phone said they'd fix it for free under 'materials and workmanship' if it turns out to be related to the service. Thanks for the advice everyone.
