Subject: idle problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 dakota 3.9L with 55k miles. I first start it, it runs good, idles well. I drive a short distance then restart it 5-10 minutes later and it will not idle, it dies. It will run good driving, but I stop and it dies again. I can keep my foot on the gas and keep it at an idle of 700 RPM and it runs smooth. It is not every time either. it may go a few months and no problem, or in warm weather. One reply I got they said to change the idle control motor. will I have to make any adjustments after changing it? Is this the right part to change?

Message: Have your battery checked, a week battery can cause some strange problems. Auto parts stores will check it for free.

Message: in my case, the computer programming was messed up and sending the wrong signals to the idle control valve. reset computer and it's all good.

Message: thanks for the advice. I did take it to the dodge dealer and they reloaded the program, but it didn't help. they have done this 2 times. they didn't find a problem. i discovered it only happens when the engine is warm and only after you restart it. you can hold your foot on the gas and it will idle smooth, and runs great. you let your foot off the gas and it dies. this has been going on for 3 years. it only happens in cold weather and may go a month and be ok.

Message: I was wondering, what heat sensor controls the idle, or choke. Or does it use a heat sensor? I really don't know what parts control the idle.
