Subject: Where to buy wheel spacers?
IP: Logged

Message:
Anyone know of a website or local parts store that stocks wheel spacers that will fit our dakotas? I have 8.25 rear axel and I've purchased two different universal sets and neither have worked so far.

Anyone know where to buy them?

why?

from a mechanical standpoint all that will do is wear out the wheel bearings a lot faster

Yep. Puts unnecessary strain on the wheel bearings, and makes all those steering and suspension parts work even harder.

Yes, I understand the concerns about spacers but my problem is that I have after market wheels A/E 589s and the balancer weights on my new rear drums are not allowing the wheels to sit flush because the blancers are 2-4 inches long. The old drum balancers were less than an inch and only the slightest wobble was noticable in my wheel and that didn't bother me. The balancers on my new drums however, are causing my wheels to sit at an angel and wobble very noticably.

The stock wheels have that nice spacer built into them on the backside that allow clearance for the balancers on the drums and I know this because when I put those stock wheels back on my truck there was no wobble in my wheels. I've gone to three different auto parts stores trying to find some drums that don't have blancers sticking up way off of them, with no luck. I've returned two sets of drums already and I'm on my 3rd set in two weeks because it's taken this long to figure out the problem. Currently I have some heavy duty washers on my studs which have pushed the wheels out enough to stop the wheel wobble but this is not the ideal situation obviously.

I tried several of the universal spacers from 2 web sites and none of those fit. I did find some 3/16 spacers on E-bay yesterday which are especially made for our trucks (4 for 19.99) so I've ordered those and should have them in a day or two.

I don't know what's up with all the manufacturers of the replacement drums these days but all three local auto parts stores I went too all had these huge 2-4 weight balancers on them which stick out 1/4 of an inch or more. I think others are going to run into this problem too in the near future if they have after market wheels.

Could you give a detailed description of your truck and where you live, maybe even your license plate number.?
I do not want to be anywhere near you when you have that cobbled-up mess on the streets.
It all begins with using the right parts (wheels). If they had the proper backspacing you would not be endangering the lives of others.
