Message: My 2001 Dakota has almost 54,000 miles on the original brakes. When I had the ball joints replaced at the dealers, they quoted me $180 to replace the pads with their Value Line pads and turn the rotors. The dealer said the pads had 3/32 left on them. The local Checker Auto parts and Autozone only charge about $10-15 each to turn the rotors. So, I'm thinking about trying to replace the pads myself - I've never done that before. Do you guys have any advice on which brand pads to use? Are ceramic pads OK or would you use semi-metallic? The truck is for general daily use, commuting, etc, no towing at this point. My neighbor used some cheapie generic brands and they've squealed from the start. Thanks!

Message: Brake jobs on disc brakes are pretty easy. It is certainly something the average guy can do in the home garage. Get a service manual and go for it.
Ceramic pads are the latest technology for good braking power. Their strong points are low dust and no audible squealing. Seems like I read on one of the manufacturers web site that they were not recommended for towing, though. But now I can't remember which web site. Carbon metallic pads I think are a little better, but you have to use more care in installation or you'll hear the squealing.

Message: I talked with a friend today who said to get semi-metallic pads, similar to the originals - with 54k miles, that doesn't seem too bad for mileage. He thought the ceramics would be pretty noisy (squeal. There's also something called "NAO organic pads", but those are apparently pricey.

Message: NAO means "non-asbestos organic". Most brake pads still have asbestos in them. When asbestos was banned from other products in 1999, an exemption was made for brake linings.
I've always had great service from semi-metallics - up to 125K miles and linings only half worn. No squealing.

Message: I use the OEM Chrysler semi-metallics from the dealer. Yes, they're more ($57 two years ago), but they really last and are quiet, and safety is my main concern.

Message: Rich, if your friend thinks ceramic pads will be too noisy, then he hasn't done his homework. Most shops are going to ceramic pads for better customer satisfaction and fewer returns. The squeal, just like other brake pads. But it happens at such a high frequency, we can't hear it. Maybe the dog can?

Message: Thanks for the info. I thought ceramic brakes were generally quieter than semi's. If the weather holds this weekend I'll try to get the pads replaced.
