Subject: The Honda Ridgeline

Message:
A while back some Honda guys came in here talking smack about the new honda going to be the best TRUCK now that they are making a "truck".

I have started seeing thos ba$tards.

They did NOT re invent the TRUCK!!!

They re invented the EL CAMINO!!!!!!!!! (Ranchero, or more likely, the Suburu BRAT)!!

HA HA!!!

I wonder how that 3.4 V6 will tow. Probably like sh*t. They got a pretty high HP rating, of course form a high revving engine. But the torque is only 250 ish and way up at 4500 RPM's. More than 1,000 RPM's higher than a V8 would to pull a load up some hills.

I think it will actually sell quite well and the engineering on it is,
of course be a Honda, quite impressive. I dont think it will be
runnng the Rubicon and really, it wasn't intended to. I think the
market for it ill be well heeld, well educated yuppy types who
need a vehicle with a bit of utility but without all the negatives
associated with driving a pickup.

Why all the insecurity anyway? Do wehave to bash every other
vehicle on the road to feel good about our Dakota? Lets wait and
see before we piss our pants, shall we?

so have you actually seen the torque curve for the 3.5 i-vtec v6?

It is not nearly as peaky as you would like to believe. Yes it does rely alot more on technology than the 4.7, but the torque curve is still pretty flat.

I think the ridgeline will be very popular in planned urban communties and will fill that role very very well.

Im willing to bet all of you that the ridgeline will out sell the dakota also that engine has more power than a v8 dakota....You keep bringing up TOWING um your saying that you tow with your dakota heavy sh*t why wont you just buy a full size if you need to tow heavy sh*t. The ridgeline might not be the best truck out there but for damn sure its way better than the dakota.

better than the dakota at bieng more carlike. i use a truck for truck duties. that includes offroading in a regular basis, and hauling quite a bit in the bed. the ridgeline wont do either well

Umm.... "GetReal", you need to take your own advice. If the masses like this thing better than a Dakota, so what? McDonald's sells the most hamburgers, does that make them the best? On power, the HO 4.7 has 260 HP. That's 5 more than the Honda which needs 4 valves per cylinder and fancy variable timing to get that power. And horsepower isn't everything in trucks. I've driven 66,000 lb diesel semis that had less HP than my Dakota (but about twice the torque.) Both 4.7s make more torque than that Honda does. As for towing, a fullsize sure is nice when you're pulling a trailer half the time but who does that?! A Dakota's a lot nicer to drive unhitched than a fullsize and handles a trailer almost as well as a 1/2 ton. What's not to like about that?

Dontre, Honda builds most its vehicles sold in the US here. Ridgeline will be built in the US.

5000lb max tow rating? Hell my old 92 Sonoma had the same max rating. Wait until some goofball tries to tow a 36' camper trailer with it and mess it up. :) Where as a new dakota has a 7,000 rating. Even the last gen had 6500 or so.

Nice how they integrated the bed to the cab like the Avalanche. Now instead of a simpel $1500 bed replacement if damaged, its gonna be well over $4000 to fix. Although I do like the lockable trunk under the bed floor idea.

I doubt many of the Hondas will see any severe duty. They'll end up like all the Avalanches around here...22 inch rims and street tires, chrome door handles and mirrors, ect. I don't fault Honda for jumping into the "truck" market. They'll sell thousands of them just because they're the newest thing out there. But, just like the Lincoln Blackwood, Cadillac Escalade, ect., there won't be many of them on a farm or carrying welding equipment (for example) to a job site. I would cringe every time I put something in the bed of a $40,000+ "truck" unless it was for a profit...lol

The Ridgeline is just another little Avalache or SUV like thing. NOT a real truck. Typical city version of the truck concept without reguard to doing any sort of work. JUst another look for a CRV etc. I doubt you'll ever seeing one pulling anything other than a boat or little camper. NObody would get one for work. I had a Subuaru Brat for awhile. It was fun for hunting and sking trips. Same thing.

Unfortunately, the definition of "real truck" is based more on opinion than any real hard criteria. One mans "real truck" is another mans gurly car. Remember, opinions are like arse holes...everybody's got one and it stinks.

Is the PT Cruiser a real car? Is the VW New Beetle? Is the Mazda Miata? Maybe, maybe not but they still sell. Maybe the original Hummer is the only real truck on the road. The point, or maybe the worry, with the Ridgeline from Honda's point of view is will it hit it's target demographic? Well, Honda is not a company that does things in a half azzed way so it will probably sell very well.

I don't think the folks over at American Honda really care one iota if a bunch of Dakota drivers consider it a "real truck". They're not after us and quite frankly, given the rancorous bitching that typifies this board, they are probably quite happy if we pass on it.

I think the important thing to always keep in mind is that, at best, the opinions expressed here are just that; opinions. That being said, I would not buy one, not because think it's not a "real truck" but because it's butt ugly.
