Message: Changed the oil in my 2000 4.7 a month ago. Before long started to notice leak. Usually leaving a quarter size dot on the drive. Today leaving the office I discovered softball size drip. After investigation I discovered filter gasket had separated. You guessed it.....FRAM!! That was the last one this truck will ever see. Drained it and went with 5000 mile Mobil and a Bosch filter. Hopefully no damage done other than an oil splattered undercarriage. I'd guess it lost half a quart over that 200 miles or so.

Message: Not saying you did, but whenever people i know, had similar issues, they over tightened the filter. My wife and her sister used to take both of their cars to a chain and they would always over tighten it.
There is good in this. It brings up a good point about checking your vehicle out often!! Most people do not check their oil (among other things) often enough!
I'm glad that you caught it before it became a big problem!

Message: I'd been using Fram filters since I bought the truck in 2001 and this was the first time this has happened. I've noticed many posts with negative opinions toward them. They do suggest a full turn once contact has been made but that seems way too tight. Hand tight has always done fine. Many quirks with these Dakotas. I just recently found this site and I too have noticed many of the issues posted here.

Message: I think Fram makes a good filter. It may not be up to the standards of those who believe that by spending 5 times as much for one of those "Amway" filters their engine will make peak power and torque for eternity, but I change my dino oil every 5k. I've cut a few old Fram filters open and have never seen the blown off filter caps or clogged blow off valves that one web site claimed happened to every Fram filter because it said Fram on the outside.
Chances are you over tightened the filter or put it on dry and chafed the gasket. Live and learn, you'll get the hang of it. I've done thousands of oil changes over the years and I'll bet the money I've saved could buy me a really nice crate motor, if I neede one. Never worn out an engine though.
